Clothing-optional queer guesthouse and campground in Golden Bay since 1984, with cabins, dorms, lodge rooms and a bush bath. About 1 hour from Motueka.
MOTUEKA: THE HONEST 2026 GUIDE FOR LGBTQ+ TRAVELLERS
The honest summary: Motueka is a working orchard town of about 8,200 people and the last proper stop before Abel Tasman National Park. It has no gay bar, no sauna and no rainbow group of its own. What it does have is a relaxed small-town feel, good motels, a busy Sunday market, and one of New Zealand's oldest queer guesthouses an hour over the hill in Golden Bay. Nelson, about 45 minutes away, is where the region's queer community life happens.
LEGAL IN ONE LINE
Sex between men was decriminalised in 1986, the Human Rights Act 1993 bans discrimination based on sexual orientation, same-sex marriage has been legal since August 2013, conversion practices were banned in 2022, and self-identified gender markers on birth certificates (including non-binary) have been available since June 2023.
WHERE MOTUEKA IS
Motueka sits at the mouth of the Motueka River on Tasman Bay, in the Tasman District at the top of the South Island. The name comes from Motuweka, usually translated as "island of the weka". It is the district's second-largest town after Richmond. The 2023 census counted 8,190 residents.
Nelson is about 45 km away by State Highways 60 and 6 through Richmond, roughly 45 minutes by car. Nelson Airport (NSN), with flights to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, is about 40 minutes' drive. The eBus Motueka express runs to Richmond and Nelson on weekdays, four trips each way; check ebus.nz for any weekend service before you rely on it. For Abel Tasman and the beaches you will want a car or a shuttle.
THE SCENE, HONESTLY
There are no LGBTQ+ venues in Motueka. We searched gay travel directories, Google Maps (in English) and local listings, and found only ordinary pubs, cafés and motels. We don't call any of them gay-friendly beyond the welcome you would expect anywhere in New Zealand, and you should not need to look for one. Same-sex couples are unremarkable here.
The one place in the wider area that is queer by design is Autumn Farm, at 37 Central Takaka Road in Golden Bay. It has run since 1984 as a clothing-optional guesthouse and campground, used mostly by gay and bisexual men but open to other queer guests and naturists. It has a lodge, cabins, dorm beds, tent sites and an outdoor bush bath. Gay Express wrote about its 31st Summer Camp in January 2026, and it also runs a Naked Week in late January. It is about an hour from Motueka over Tākaka Hill, a winding road, so treat it as a destination rather than a day trip.
For community, look to Nelson. Q Youth, founded in 2009, runs a weekly drop-in for rainbow young people aged 11 to 18 and a monthly group for 18 to 30 year olds, and supports school queer-straight alliances across Nelson and Tasman. National services such as OUTLine (the rainbow support line) and InsideOUT work by phone and online, wherever you are.
PRIDE AND EVENTS
Motueka doesn't hold its own Pride. The regional festival is Whakatū Pride (formerly Nelson Pride), which runs for about two weeks in April and early May in Nelson, not in February like Auckland's. The 2026 festival ran from 18 April to 2 May and marked 40 years since homosexual law reform. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. Wellington Pride is in March and Auckland Pride in February. Queenstown's Winter Pride is a ski-season event in late August and early September.
WHERE TO STAY
Motueka's accommodation is mainstream: motels along High Street and King Edward Street, pub rooms at Hotel Motueka and the Riwaka Hotel, and lodges and campgrounds out towards Kaiteriteri and Mārahau. None is a gay property, and we don't claim otherwise. Book early for December to February, when Abel Tasman is at its busiest and rooms fill quickly. If you want a queer-run stay, Autumn Farm in Golden Bay is the only one we could confirm in the region.
Abel Tasman National Park is the reason most visitors come. Kaiteriteri (14 km, about 20 minutes) and Mārahau (about 18 km) are the southern gateways, with water taxis, kayak hire and the start of the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Awaroa Lodge, inside the park, is reached only by water taxi, on foot or by air.
In town, the Motueka Sunday Market runs every Sunday from 8am to 1pm (except Christmas Day and Easter Sunday) in the Decks Reserve car park off Wallace Street, with produce, crafts and second-hand stalls. The saltwater baths on the foreshore are the only ones in the region. Near the old wharf, the rusting hull of the Janie Seddon, a 1901 government ship that sank at her moorings in the late 1940s, sits on the mudflats and is best seen at low tide.
Tasman's Great Taste Trail cycleway passes through Motueka on its loop through Richmond and Māpua. The town's economy rests on apples, hops and kiwifruit (it was also the centre of tobacco growing until the early 1980s), so expect orchards, hop gardens and seasonal workers in summer and autumn. Beyond Tākaka Hill lie Golden Bay and Kahurangi National Park.
PRACTICAL TIPS
- Motueka is one of New Zealand's sunnier places. January afternoons average around 24°C and July around 13°C.
- Supermarkets, pharmacies and fuel are in the town centre around High Street (State Highway 60). Stock up here before heading into the park or over to Golden Bay.
- Nightlife is pubs and restaurant bars that close fairly early. For a night out, Nelson is the closest option.
