Graz, the capital of Styria and Austria's second-largest city, has a small but genuine LGBTQ+ scene that is easy to piece together over a weekend. Rather than one gay quarter, the venues are scattered across the Lend and Gries districts just west of the Mur River and around Jakomini, with the historic Altstadt as a central, walkable base. This guide covers the bars, clubs and community spaces that are actually queer, so you know where to go.
baseMENt 2.0 - the flagship gay bar
The heart of gay male nightlife in Graz is baseMENt 2.0 (Brockmanngasse 87, in the Jakomini district). It is a dedicated gay men's cellar bar and club, complete with a darkroom, cruising areas and recurring naked and underwear parties. It is the one true "gay bar" in the city and the best starting point for a night out. Expect a friendly, unpretentious crowd of locals; weekends are busiest.
The FAGtory Club - the monthly queer party
The FAGtory Club is Graz's long-running queer party, held roughly once a month at the Postgarage (Dreihackengasse 42, Gries). Two floors serve up techno, pop and trash, drag hosts, and a darkroom, and the event donates its proceeds to LGBTI causes. Check the current line-up before you travel, as dates move around the calendar.
Red Rose Bar and STARS Cafe Bar
Red Rose Bar (Griesgasse 31) is a cosy lesbian bar in Gries and one of the few dedicated women-focused queer spaces in the region. STARS Cafe Bar (Schoenaugasse 9, Jakomini) is a relaxed gay and gay-friendly cafe-bar that is good for an early drink before heading to baseMENt or a FAGtory night.
feel free - the queer community centre
Just off the nightlife map but central to queer life in Graz is feel free on Annenstrasse in Lend - Austria's first dedicated queer community centre, which opened in 2023. Run by RosaLila PantherInnen, the LGBTIQ advocacy organisation for Styria, it hosts counselling, groups, workshops and cultural events throughout the year and is the best place to find out what is on. It is a community space and organisation rather than a bar, but well worth knowing about.
No gay sauna in Graz
Graz does not have a dedicated gay sauna. Despite what some older listings suggest, there is no established gay bathhouse in the city; the nearest gay saunas are in Vienna, roughly two and a half hours away by train.
Pride and events
Graz's Pride march, the Christopher Street Day (CSD Graz), takes place in late June and drew more than 15,000 people in 2025, with a parade through the Stadtpark and a festival in the Volksgarten. In February, RosaLila PantherInnen also stages the legendary Tuntenball, a glamorous drag charity ball at the Congress Graz that has run since 1991 and is a highlight of the Austrian queer calendar.
Austria is one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly countries in Europe, with marriage equality since 2019 and strong anti-discrimination protections, so you can expect a safe and welcoming visit. For larger circuit parties and international events, Vienna is an easy day or weekend trip away.
