Gaukurinn is a live-music bar in an old music hall on Tryggvagata, close to Reykjavík's Old Harbour. For about ten years it was the main stage for the city's alternative queer scene, with drag, open mics and punk gigs. In 2025 the operating company went bankrupt and the venue reopened under new management. Much of the queer programming has since moved to other venues. Today it's best treated as a gay-friendly mainstream bar with live music and karaoke, not as a queer venue. Queer nights still appear sometimes, especially around Reykjavík Pride in August. Check the calendar on gaukurinn.is before going for a specific event.

One of our favorite spots to visit in Reykjavik. Diverse crowd, diverse scenes, awesome music venue, awesome bar, great prices, perfect opportunity to soak in Iceland. I plan to visit again when I return, many times.
