Bar Pokusa – the illusion of inclusivity and systemic exclusion. Bar Pokusa is a venue that only theoretically aspires to be a "safe space." In reality, it's a place saturated with overt hostility towards those representing normative, conservative, and monogamous attitudes. My experience there has been unequivocally negative – both in terms of physical safety and respect for identity. 1. Exclusion based on appearance: Despite my meticulous attention to aesthetics (freshly dyed peach-blonde hair, black Monet sweatshirt), my attire – including pink pajamas with stars, a comforting element after the trauma – resulted in immediate rejection. One customer outright ordered me to leave, claiming that I "didn't fit in." The staff (a 35-40-year-old bartender) remained completely passive, silently consenting to this form of verbal aggression. 2. An incident during a private conversation: A key moment of discomfort occurred during my phone conversation with my spouse. I was discussing deeply personal issues: family problems with my mother-in-law and the foundations of my life – fidelity, monogamy, and a heteronormative model of relationship. The client sitting next to me, actively browsing profiles on Grindr, repeatedly directed judgmental, disapproving glances at me. His reaction to my remarks about traditional marital life was a form of "silent judgment" for my adherence to values that are clearly not tolerated in this place. 3. Safety and infrastructure: The premises are extremely dangerous for people with limited mobility and trauma. The complete darkness in the darkrooms, the lack of emergency lighting, and the pervasive "hookup" atmosphere create a sense of insecurity. The amount of over 200 PLN spent here is completely disproportionate to the level of stress and the lack of professionalism of the staff, who focus solely on serving "their" clients. Summary: This is a space for a very narrow, structured group. If you have a transnormative identity and value fidelity, monogamy, and traditional family structures, you will encounter open hostility. A one-star rating is definitely excessive. My discomfort was deepened by the fact that, in a space that supposedly seemed "safe," my identity was met with open disapproval. While discussing fundamental issues in our relationship with my wife—monogamy, loyalty, and difficult family relationships—I felt the weight of another guest's judgmental gaze. The fact that this person was simultaneously browsing profiles on a dating site created a painful contrast between my need for stability and fidelity and the atmosphere focused on short-term relationships. I perceived these repeated glances as a form of "silent judgment" for my conservative lifestyle, ultimately confirming that at Bar Pokusa, there is no room for respect for diversity unless it fits a specific, narrow mold. During my stay at the establishment, a situation arose that violated my privacy and psychological well-being. During a phone conversation with my wife—concerning strictly personal matters such as fidelity, monogamy, and my relationship with my mother-in-law—I became the subject of unwanted attention. A nearby customer, actively using Grindr at the time, repeatedly and ostentatiously observed me, reacting with his gaze to my statements regarding heteronormative identity and traditional marital values. His behavior, culminating in his abrupt departure from the establishment, was a clear signal of his disapproval of attitudes that deviated from the prevailing model in the establishment.
Bar Pokusa is a venue that, on paper, purports to be a "queer safe space," but in practice, it's a classic example of hidden, silent heterophobia, transheterophobia, androphobia, transmisandry, misandry, and transandrophobia. I entered as a transgender, transheterosexual, hyperheteronormative person—a man with female anatomy, fully groomed: peach-blonde hair (freshly dyed, medium length), a pink puffer jacket, pink star-print pajamas (clean, homemade, from my father—an element of emotional comfort after trauma), black sneakers, a black Monet sweatshirt, and black jeggings. A look consistent with my identity, not a "costume." Within the first 10-15 minutes, I fell victim to a silent but clear rejection. One customer (around 45-50 years old, a "closeted gay with a wedding ring tucked in his pocket" type) loudly said to the room, "Get out of here, you don't belong." The bartender (a man around 35-40, a regular staff member) didn't react in any way – he didn't admonish the customer, didn't ask for context, didn't reassure me. The lack of response to my neutral smile and attempt to remain calm was clear: the verdict was based solely on appearance. The darkrooms are completely dark – there's no emergency lighting except for red lights at the exits. I felt physically and mentally uncomfortable around several other customers, even if they weren't looking directly at me. The mere awareness of absolute darkness after being rejected intensified the feeling of danger. There was no physical contact, but the atmosphere of the place itself – the lack of any control or visibility – is extremely dangerous for people with sexual trauma. In short: this is not an inclusive space. It's a space where only one, very narrow version of queerness is tolerated – the Grindr, hookup, feminized version of gayness. People with more complex, hyperheteronormative, transgender identities (like me) are automatically excluded based on "pink pajamas and hair." Bar Pokusa doesn't meet safety or respect standards. One star is still too many. How much did it cost (per person)? Over 200 PLN (drink + cloakroom + any tips – an amount disproportionate to the level of discomfort and lack of safety). How long did you have to wait for a table? There was no wait (I was seated at the bar right away, but the atmosphere made me want to leave quickly). How would you rate the noise level? Very quiet (the darkrooms are completely silent, interrupted only by the sounds of other patrons – which intensifies the psychological discomfort in the dark).
I was there today and had heard a lot of bad reviews, but after what I saw today, two young guys came in and argued with the bartender. They said they never paid for entry. When the bartender tried to explain it to them, they started insulting him and left, very offended and disgusted by the staff. In my opinion, the bartender was fine, saying that everyone was paying and either they would pay or they had to leave. As for the place, the renovated part of the place is nice. I heard from the bartender that the rest will be renovated later. It's a basement and there's a damp smell, but I think the owners are doing what they can.
Great place for gays. Cool bartenders and a great atmosphere.
