Hotel Cottage is a mid-range mainstream hotel at Miraflores 1360, rated 4.5 from more than 3,000 Google reviews. It is gay-friendly in the way most of Montevideo is; it is not a gay hotel. Uruguay has had same-sex marriage since 2013 and couples rarely need to think twice here. The street sits in the quiet residential east of the city near the beach and the Rambla, a fair taxi ride from the Ciudad Vieja and the small gay bar scene around the centre. Good for a calm stay by the sea, less so if you want to walk to nightlife.

When I spoke to the hotel receptionist to upgrade to a room that wasn't listed on "booking.com," he tried to force me to pay the cancellation fee and then book separately. Don't do business with dishonest people; the service was terrible.
