Pride in Lagos

The bravest Pride on this site. Nigeria criminalizes same-sex relationships with up to fourteen years in prison — and yet, every June since 2021, QueerCity Media has staged a full week of Pride in Lagos: panel talks, art exhibitions, drag and ballroom nights, and the Equality Awards honouring Nigerian queer trailblazers. It works because of how carefully it's built. Venues are never published; events are RSVP-only with vetting, announced shortly before, and photography is tightly controlled. That isn't secrecy for drama — it's how a community celebrates safely under a hostile law. Travellers should understand this is a community event first: register through the organizers' channels (@prideinlagos), follow their security guidance to the letter, and come to support, not to spectate. The 2026 edition ran June 20–29; expect the next in late June 2027.
