Although it's been over ten years since I last visited Guangzhou, and the area around the CITIC Plaza is now filled with even more skyscrapers, I still prefer accommodations along the central axis. I've stayed at Sofitel hotels in Xi'an and Nanjing, and this one has an even more luxurious lobby. The rooms were also very well maintained, and swimming at 6 PM was a pleasant experience. The French toast at breakfast was served in thick slices... which was disappointing. Overall, the two-night stay was alright, with minor flaws outweighing the major ones. I'd recommend it.

The Sofitel Hotel in Guangzhou is completely inadequate for a five-star hotel! We arrived at the hotel around 7:00 PM and had to wait at reception for about 20 minutes to check in. The line was huge, and there were only two receptionists working! For some reason, they charged us a deposit. We'd stayed at Hiltons several times before, and they'd never asked for a deposit! And worst of all, no one warned us about the deposit in advance! There was no welcome drink after the trip, and this is a five-star hotel, considered elite in its own club! When we booked the hotel, we asked for a room higher than ours, even though I'm an Accor Silver member, and my request was completely ignored! We were given a room on the 10th floor, even though the rooms started on the 9th floor! Any requests or questions we made to the hotel staff were met with the response, "I don't understand you!" Receptionists require knowledge of English! During our entire stay, three days in fact, not a single person smiled, not even the staff! There was no body lotion in the room, which was truly shocking. And the worst part: on the day of check-out, they were supposed to call us at 6:30 a.m. to wake us up, and we repeated this three times the day before! There was no call!!!!!!! This is a first for us; simpler hotels have better service! We were picked up from the hotel by a transfer with a Russian-speaking driver, and he asked in Chinese why no one had woken us up! He didn't even translate the answer, and the girl who checked the room didn't even apologize! We absolutely hated the hotel! We definitely won't return and will tell our friends not to come.
