Fitzwilton Hotel

We booked the Fitzwilton Hotel for a last-minute weekend away with our toddler, using a SuperValu Breaks deal which included two nights’ accommodation, breakfast and a two-course evening meal each night. Overall, we felt we got good value for money from the package, although there were a few things that could have made the stay more enjoyable. One thing I would mention for anyone booking is the parking. The booking information stated that there was free parking onsite, but when we arrived the available spaces were very limited and unfortunately there were none left for us. This was particularly difficult for us as my husband was wearing a full leg brace after breaking his knee in two places. We contacted reception, who helpfully advised us about parking on the adjacent street or at Merchants Quay Car Park. We did manage to find a space on the street, but noticed that the parking was limited to two hours, so this wouldn't be suitable for an overnight stay. Merchants Quay is only around a 10-minute walk from the hotel, so it would be perfectly manageable for most people, but it was quite difficult for my husband given his injury. This isn't really the hotel's fault, but it's worth being aware that onsite parking is quite limited, particularly if mobility is an issue. Our first evening meal was unfortunately disappointing. We were seated and served quickly, but despite requesting a high chair for our toddler and some water for the table when we arrived, neither came for quite some time and we had to ask again. My carbonara was also very bland and I ended up adding salt, pepper and even mustard to try to give it some flavour. I also ordered the chocolate brownie for dessert and specifically asked for it without the toffee sauce, as I don't like it. This was confirmed by the waiter, but unfortunately the brownie arrived with the sauce poured over it. I didn't want to send it back and waste the food, so I tried to eat it but could only manage about half. That night was also quite uncomfortable. The room was very warm and there was no air conditioning, so we had to sleep with the window open. Unfortunately, our room overlooked the rear/parking area and there was quite a lot of noise during the night, including shouting and what sounded like a delivery or kegs being moved. This woke both us and our toddler a couple of times, so we didn't get a particularly good night's sleep. Thankfully, things improved considerably from there. Breakfast was a much better experience, with a good selection of options for all of us, and the high chair arrived quickly. We enjoyed our day out and returned to the hotel for dinner that evening. The second evening meal was much more enjoyable. We were seated and served quickly, and this time our water and toddler's high chair arrived promptly. We really appreciated the waiter asking whether we'd like our starter and main course brought out together, as we were sharing some of the food with our toddler, so this worked really well for us. I had the Korean-style wings to start, which were lovely and sweet, followed by pizza with a really nice crunchy base. We much preferred this meal to the first evening. That night we again slept with the window open, but thankfully there was no noise, so we had a much better night's sleep. Breakfast the following morning was also very good. Overall, while the first evening left us wondering whether we'd made the right choice for our last-minute getaway, the experience definitely improved and we ended up being happy enough with our stay. The breakfasts were good, our second evening meal was very enjoyable, and considering what was included in the SuperValu Breaks package, we felt we got good value for money. I wouldn't personally rate the stay as five-star, as there were a few areas that could be improved, particularly the limited parking, the first evening meal and the noise/heat in our room. However, we would consider booking another similar deal at the Fitzwilton in the future.

Overall, the hotel is fine. However, our experience with the reception staff wasn't entirely pleasant. They weren't very friendly and didn't give us all the necessary information, such as the fact that we had to request room cleaning. When we arrived on the first day, everything was exactly as we had left it. They weren't particularly friendly. On the other hand, at breakfast, Lynn, who was in charge, was a delightful person. Attentive, helpful, accommodating, friendly, and eager to please the guests. I would rate it as the best thing about the hotel. A family from Tenerife

Hotel was modern, but very warm, no air con. Also feels like it's located in a run down part of town. Great service on the parking, it's a bit of a nightmare tbh, but the hotel guy helped guide us and sorted us out.
