Capocotta is Rome's gay beach — and one of the most famous in Italy. Located within the Capocotta nature reserve on the Lido di Ostia coast, approximately 30 kilometres south of the city, it is accessible by the Lido railway line from Piramide (Metro B) plus a local bus, total travel time around 60 minutes. The beach is official and authorized: large rainbow flags in the dunes mark the LGBTQ+ section, known locally as "Il Buco" (The Hole, after the informal nickname). The beach is naturist in sections; clothing-optional zones are clearly informal. The crowd is predominantly Italian gay men; the atmosphere is relaxed and social. Active from around May through September; peak in July and August.
