The County Hotel, Newcastle

The convenient location can mean it's a bit noisy depending on the room. Shocking customer service. My partner is still waiting on a refund for breakfasts we didn't have. Multiple phone calls and promises that it'll happen have come to nothing 2 weeks later.

I stayed in an executive double. The room looked nice, but was tiny. The window wouldn't open and there was no AC, so the room was hot and stuffy. There was a table fan, but it wasn't that great and I'm surprised that a 4* hotel wouldn't have AC. There were only 2 teabags and these were not replenished during my 2 night stay. There was a bath, but the plug did not seal and so the water just emptied away. The bathroom was also tiny. The bed was very firm and you could feel the springs through it, the pillows felt very cheap and flat. The staff were nice, I arrived at around 11.30 and asked if I could leave my bags until checking time and the lady on reception very kindly checked me in there and then. There's a £50 deposit you have to pay on arrival with no prior warning, which is annoying. The location is excellent. You are literally seconds from the railway station. I didn't hear any street noise and was on the 3rd floor facing the station. To be honest I'd say it's not quite on par with a premier inn. Although it looks a bit nicers and has a fridge - a premier inn has climate control, and you can help yourself to teabags, milk and coffee sachets and the beds and pillows are way more comfortable. I'd stay here again, if I had an early train because of it's proximity to the railway station, otherwise I think I'd go elsewhere.

For the price very good hotel in Newcastle stayed here a couple times now. Not now west ham are going down though!

Update: Stayed here again. Generally a nice hotel but a few niggles. Room initially appeared well furnished however I noticed that there was no way to control the temperature (no air con). The mattress was incredibly firm and certainly not pocket sprung - something that would belong in student halls not in a hotel. I had to sleep on top of the duvet for some cushioning. Food was good, coffee was in an urn so tasted a bit odd (I would suggest they invest in proper coffee machines). And I still recommend ear plugs! ----- Stayed in a junior suite for one night. Room good, clean and large although a bit of maze finding it and a lot of stairs which I struggled a bit with carrying my luggage. I am a light sleeper and, although the noise was dampened, I could hear street noises through the night, which is to be expected really in such a central location (opposite the train station). I'd recommend taking ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. Breakfast was typical hotel options (full English, toast, pastry, cereal etc).

Great hotel absolutely beautiful interior however the £50 deposit upon booking is definitely a big off put. Mini bar in room should only be there on request . However great location right opposite station.

I had a comfy and lovely stay at The Country Hotel. I had some problems with my bathtub, but the staff fixed it immediately! So I would definitely recommend this place. Also it's perfect if you travel with the train.

Only there for a hearing test but looked nice ideal location for visiting Newcastle

I stayed at this hotel last year and had no problems and thoroughly enjoyed my stay which is why I chose to stay again this year. All but one of the staff were helpful, professional and friendly. One of the managers SIMON should not be working with customers, he was rude, unhelpful, surly and lied about me to other staff in front of my face, he was the worst person I have had to deal with at any hotel I have stayed in. The problems we had were in themselves not major or could not be helped but the major problem was the bath plug, it was stuck so the bath could not be drained. My husband needed a shower, we had theatre tickets. SIMONS solution was my husband could shower in another room and we'd have to wait until the next morning for someone to fix it (really) We asked for another room and was told the hotel was full. His attitude felt as if he just couldn't be bothered. I eventually went down to the reception to speak to someone else but he was also at the reception. Whilst I was speaking to a young woman he turned to her and said id shut the door in his face. (A bold face lie) In the end we were given a new room but it was too late to swap at that moment so we had to move our belongings to the new room after going to the theatre, cutting our night short. Other problems were the television not working and being woken up during the second night by the fire alarm going off 3 times. On a brighter note the other manager Callum was very professional, friendly and apologetic for the problems and managed to put a smile back on my face.
