Walt Whitman Residence

The museum is small, but the guide is not only knowledgeable but also makes the visit entertaining. I learned many facts about Walt Whitman and enjoyed the whole visit.

My friend and I visited Walt Whitman Birthplace on a quiet Thursday morning and it was glorious. I highly recommend for any fans of the poet or American history, and certainly anyone living on Long Island should go as well. We got a PRIVATE TOUR -just the two of us! Ask for Barbara Nelson, who was amazing and taught us so much -not only about Walt and his times, but also about American and even world history. The grounds are gorgeous and it's such a hidden gem. Don't be fooled by the view from the street -GO INSIDE! We paid $10 entrance fee for each -very in expensive and well worth the investment. The tour lasted 1.5 hours, but we had many questions. Barbara was very patient with us and really took her time to answering all our questions. We also both picked up fun souvenirs at the gift shop, which is a great place for Christmas presents in my opinion. I really cannot say a bad word about this place or how it is run -they know what they're doing here preserving our great literary history! I intend to return for a special event or two!

Was a little hard to find, the website does not list OLD Walt Whitman Road, but we found it. Interesting to see the house where Whitman was born. Museum was nicely done.

It’s a really cool Historic Site to check out. The tour is really informative. The interpretation center has great information and a fantastic gift shop to grab a text to read. Beautiful site worth all the time to enjoy you could spare.

En route between New York and Sag Harbor, great admirors of Walt Whitman, we stopped in Huntington on a foggy December morning. The museum and the house were closed to the public, and seeing our disappointment, Cynthia Shor, the Director, and her team, were incredibly kind and fast to react, deciding to show us the exhibition devoted to the poet, and then, as a kindness among all, to open the house, allowing us to walk around in a religious silence, and to enjoy the spirit of the place, which is a gem of vernacular architecture as a matter of fact. Thank you for this memorable gift, and in this horrendous moments we live, hit by a demonic virus, God bless the 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd and America.

Having been enthralled with Leaves of Grass for 50 years, it was a true delight to visit this museum and home. You will learn much about the poet and his impact on history, as well as his journey as a writer. It is a small but packed museum space, and the birthplace home is very interesting (well preserved and staged). Be sure to listen to the recording of Whitman reading his poetry with the help of Thos. Edison on a prototype phonograph. Magic.

Walt Whitman grew up in Huntington Station, NY on a large tract of land owned by his family. He was the founder of a local Huntington newspaper, The Long Islander, that is still in print today. The museum has special days where they have wonderful docent led tours of the home which is furnished in nineteenth century furniture. It has audio-visual materials related to Walt Whitman and his peers. Check their schedule for special events.

Walt Whitman was born and lived in this house until he was 4. Although he was raised elsewhere, he always had a warm feeling for Long Island and visited there often during his life. I went with a group of 8 friends and had arranged to have tea as well as a tour. Our docent who was actually from London explained the intricacies of the tea, difference between high tea and regular tea. We had tea sandwiches, as well as scones and other sweets. A different docent gave us a tour of the house and our visit ended with a few short videos about Whitman.

We had an excellent tour of this beautiful house, where Walt Whitman lived the first four years of his life. The guide gave a lot of information because we were interested. There's also a small museum which is worth seeing. Jayne's Hill is nearby and also worth a visit while you're in the area.

There is lots of history here. They also have events here and is worth stopping by. It is a small place but you can learn something while here
