Terrible communication and took 3 weeks to return security deposit after repeated attempts at communication
Horrible all around. Go somewhere else.
Deceptive practices... Asking a consumer to simply trust an unknown business agent with $500 cash sent as "friends and family", which has no protections for the consumer, is not appropriate. If I cannot send a security deposit via a business transaction that offers protections to me as a consumer, this is a suspicious and unacceptable expectation.
I strongly recommend all to avoid this place and book elsewhere. After booking, I received a message from the “host” requesting a $500 security deposit via Venmo, PayPal (Friends & Family), or Zelle, along with a government-issued ID sent to a private email address. The message also stated that the check-in code would not be provided until these requirements were completed. These requests occurred after the reservation was confirmed and required sending both money and personal identification outside the booking platform. Payments through methods like PayPal Friends & Family, Venmo, or Zelle do not provide the same consumer protections as standard booking payments. The platform I booked through issued a full refund to my account after the host (surprise, surprise) refused to issue one. Travelers should carefully review any requests that involve sending payments or personal ID outside the platform after booking. If this happens, take screenshots and contact the platform’s support team immediately, or contact your bank if you booked with this “host” directly.
They will ask for an incredibly high security deposit for their cheap nightly stay (500$ for 100$ a night stay.) After which they tell you about a fee for a key that is not listed in their expedia page which is already a red flag, the rooms were nice and tidy so that was never a problem. During our stay they were incredibly responsive, but after we checked out they took days to respond to my inquiries about how I accidentally brought their key back to my state (was asking what address to send it back to), and also about when they were going to send my deposit back to me because I had left the place fully in tact with pictures to prove it. They did not respond to those either, until I called my bank to dispute the charge for failure to uphold their end of the agreement, all of a sudden they responded within an hour. Though I got most of my deposit back (435$ out of the 500$), it took a lot of elbow grease. Most of the reviews that are incredibly positive on this site are due to them kind of holding the deposit hostage until you write a good one, which you can read about on other reviews of course. The key fee they mentioned was only 50$, yet took 65$ because this is an untrustworthy business. I do not agree with the other reviews saying that the neighborhood was shady, as the area this property is in was very quiet and not too far a bus ride from the heart of chicago. Me and my partner enjoyed the walks around the neighborhood, people were friendly and the general atmosphere was nice. You cannot guarantee having another guest of this establishment being quiet which is another gamble, our guest mates took over the bathroom for four hours which was really annoying and wasn’t the properties fault but beware of that before staying here. Please do not book this guesthouse, just spend the extra money getting a hotel as you can insure your own bathroom will be yours and that no deposit money will be as hard to get back from the place. Even if the entire stay was on the cheapish side for the three nights we were there (365$ with the “key fee”), it was stressful and far from the vacation my partner and I intended for it to be. I still have my room key, but I’d rather take most of my deposit instead of pushing the matter and not having it at all which is what some of the guests in these reviews experienced. TLDR; unreliable communication, good neighborhood and a clean place but stubborn in return of incredibly high deposit money. Spend the extra money booking at an established hotel instead of here to ensure a safe and relaxing stay.
Great experience
Excellent location close to public transportation, bus and train. The only thing is that they require an additional deposit of $300. They will refund it later.
