AFFIRMATIONS IS A SAFE PLACE FOR LGBTQ COMMUNITY.
I'm Tore(torë/torre)... 29, and rather new to the community. I consider myself somewhere along trans/NB/femby...I was not raised comfortably knowing who I am. And then unfortunately I decided to try to forget about myself, and my life. Pacifying myself. Juggling a trio of hard drugs for over a decade. Til I collapsed into homelessness, proceeded to knock on the reapers door. I thoght I had finally brought about the end to my madness. Fortunately I had an epiphany. Not only was I spared, but born again. A second chance. I digress, I am sober. Actually for 2.5yr+... in this time, I realized if I am going to be any sort of happy living my life, first I need to fully know and understand who I am. To which, I self educated extensively. Then it was a matter of still having doubts plus some acceptance. So, nowdays, I know who I am. A bi, and not-cis individual... "What a surprise", I hear... Smh, LOL. So now I am expanding to the point of "okay great. now I dont want to be alone in this". Obviously Im still learning how to live and adult. To which I need to get out of my antisocial madness. I guess it was good to keep to myself while questioning. Isolated from, the *lack of* support. Tuning out the noise, the bias, chaos, doubts. The "well biologically this" & "technically that" bs, etc. Until I had my own stable foundation. Since nobody was there to help. In fact now it seems like I'm the "spokesperson"; educating many who which I am their "first encounter of". ------------------------ Anyfreakinway: this is like the only place near me (which is still 30m from Sterling Heights) that has *any* sort of support groups for LGBTQ etc. Which is great that it's here. Yet sad its like our only representation in SE MI... So I am pleased to announce I will be returning after my first visit yesterday 04/04/26... Due to the drive, not as often as I'd like so Im thinking weekly or biweekly. As for the few, terrible ratings and comments... HOW ABOUT LETS BE THANKFUL THIS PLACE EXISTS AT ALL, ESPECIALLLLLLYYYYY (THESE) DAYS!!!!!!! I'm not saying that a place or something cant improve... But to those advising this place is terrible and not to come blah blah blah..... This is where I wish people behaved differently on this matter. Like yea, nothigs ever gonna be perfect to please EVERYone. But instead of tarnishing the name and reputation of literally the only place that may offer some hope for some folks.... If you have a problem with how they operate, offer a suggestion. Offer how you can help. Ask what can you do to make sure others dont feel the same way. THIS, is where we need to leave our egos and inflated sense of self behind. UNITE. Help the community. Not runnig your mouth with complaints and sideways shttalk. Just my ideas... What would I know...I plan to leave a follow up review after a few months of going. Right now I gotta work on myself, but down the line I plan to probably volunteer with whatever I feel useful for. PEACE, LOVE, AND KIND REGARDS TO ALL, As always, -Tore.
I am always in awe of how caring and helpful Affirmations is. The food pantry volunteers are not only helpful, but kind and understanding. Every time I go to Affirmations I feel a sense of community and love. Every person I have met or worked with has enthusiasm with you, and such a kind presence. The food pantry is such a help to do many people and communities. If you're looking for a new food pantry to go to, I highly recommend Affirmations. They help you find what you need, and offer additional resources that Affirmations can provide.
Always a good place for information
Affirmations is a great place for support groups for the Lgbtq community. Just wished there was more social activities available. Like board game night, local writing group in person, social activities to meet other lgbtq other than just support groups which are more serious oriented.
Unfortunately, this space is not safe for LGBTQIA+ people of color due to racist procedures. I attended when I was a teen and it was across the street. I have yet to see staff who represent the majority of their consumers.
