Über diesen Ort Federico García Lorca Plakette (Hotel Continental)

Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) was one of Spain's most influential twentieth-century poets and dramatists, and by 1934 openly homosexual within literary Madrid though never publicly so. He was executed by Nationalist forces near Granada on 19 August 1936, at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War; the four-decade Franco dictatorship suppressed public discussion of both the killing itself and the role his homosexuality played in it. His body has never been recovered. Lorca visited Barcelona multiple times in the 1930s to stage his plays at the Teatre Principal and to deliver lectures at the Ateneu Barcelonès. His most extended stay was September-October 1935, when he lived at the Hotel Continental on La Rambla for six weeks while directing his own production of *Bodas de Sangre*. His companions during that stay included the young Spanish poet Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, a documented lover. A bronze plaque installed by the Ajuntament de Barcelona in 1998, on the sixtieth anniversary of his death, marks his residence at Hotel Continental. The plaque quotes his poem *Oda a Walt Whitman* — one of the earliest Spanish-language literary texts to write openly about male desire — and identifies him as an "assassinated poet". The 2018 replacement plaque (the earlier one was stolen) now includes a reference to his homosexuality that the 1998 version omitted. The Hotel Continental is still an operating hotel; its ground-floor reception welcomes visitors who want to see the plaque and, on request, the reproduction of Lorca's room on the third floor. Free sidewalk viewing of the plaque, 24/7. Liceu metro is one minute's walk. Combine with Antinous Bookshop three blocks south for a La Rambla queer heritage stop.

The location of this hotel was great, near Plaza Cataluña. The hotel has 24/7 buffet, something I haven’t see in other ones so far. The room was small but clean!
