Reel Affirmations ist das LGBTQ+-Filmfestival Washington DCs — eines der ältesten queeren Filmfestivals der USA, 1991 gegründet. Das Festival zeigt LGBTQ+-Spielfilme, Dokumentationen und Kurzfilme aus aller Welt über mehrere Tage im Oktober, mit Vorführungen an Spielstätten in der DC-Region. Reel Affirmations nimmt eine eigene Position im LGBTQ+-Kulturkalender DCs ein: Der Oktobertermin, der politische Charakter der Stadt und die 30-jährige Geschichte des Festivals verleihen ihm das Gewicht einer etablierten Kulturinstitution statt eines Boutique-Programms. In früheren Jahren wurden Filme aus Dutzenden Ländern gezeigt und Q&As mit Filmemachern aus der gesamten Bandbreite queeren Kinos veranstaltet. Das Festival dient zugleich als Kulturereignis und als Community-Treffen — Vorführungen, Nachgespräche und begleitende Sozial-Events bieten eine konzentrierte Phase LGBTQ+-Kulturarbeit nach der Pride und vor dem Beginn der politischen Hochsaison.
