Northern star

I stayed at Northern Star Hotel last weekend. Ill start with the good things about the hotel before i start on the negatives. ✅️Good: *Location to train station, cannot fault *Walking distance to amenities closeby *Even with bars nearby, very good nights sleep (it could of been off peak) *Room was nicely sized, with nice decor *It was basic but very workable with. The bathroom was clean, though the shower heads looked like they needed some carbon soda and lemon juice to clear out the holes (very easy job to do). *Soaps all inhouse scented and made. *Hotel Manager very pleasant and welcoming. Relative of Hotel Manager, totally bonkers but awesome too. *Loved there was a socialising room, so if there were solo travellers who wanted a chat over a cup of tea or coffee, they could. *it was reasonably priced for a weekend stay too. ⛔️Bads: *There is a smell, what of i cant put my finger on it. The amazing wax melts made by the hotel managers relative seem to mask the other smells. *The hotel is looking dated, it needs taking down from booking sites and give the hotel a lot of TLC. Doing this will attract more people. *The lock occasionally plays up so it may need some WD40 or looking at by Yale. Or maybe install a key card system. *Only 1 working CCTV camera working from knowledge, needs a few more, for safety aspect i.e. the stairs, on the corridors, etc. *There needs to be a employment drive for the hotel as some guests who arrive later and cannot get into the hotel, will result in angry guests. One of the guests stayed up till early hours and not their job to do so. *The ring doorbell doesnt work, tried it a few times, had difficulty to get to work. *Unless physically providing cooked breakfast, that needs to be taken off as something is provided, as was told breakfast was not cooked onsite, so guests would have to go externally. There is a kitchen thats in perfect condition, it just needs to feel the love there too. *A storage room would be beneficial to both hotel and guest who do not drive and allow them to explore the town before they either check in or leave for their mode of transport. I had 2 suitcases 1 was all business and the other was my clothes and stuff. Would of given the reassurance of not needing to hump suitcases up and down the narrow steps from the top floor. *Decor needs to be revised, unless asked i had no idea where the switches were. If there are guests with mobility issues then it may become a problem for the guest. *Didnt see any cleaners, but ill point out that the inner part of the windows needs cleaning as it is very dirty. There were some marks on the duvet, but nothing to major. *Linking to the point of needing TLC and employment drive, if the hotel manager erects the bar area as a alcohol free bar/breakfast bar, thatll make more room for people to socialise and relax. But after saying all that, i would stay there again, bring on 2024 😁

It's very close to The Flying Handbag, that's probably the big selling point. Room was fine. Pillows were old and not comfortable, the bathroom was big, the door lock was fiddly and took several minutes to lock and unlock. Breakfast was available in a nearby hotel and it was good.

Amazing service, beautiful room staff and their friend and son were lovely to chat with ,bedroom was so homily and comfortable would come and use again and recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay

It's a great, quiet location. The beds are new and what's more the pillows are excellent so very comfy. Excellent free WiFi. Sadly that's where the positives stop. The whole place is dirty, the bathroom floor was so sticky I hardly dared walk on it. Bathroom filthy...see photos. There's no attention to detail, meant to be tea, coffee, milk in the room or lobby...all run out. Currently sat here waiting for the breakfast I've paid for and no one in sight! Shame as the owners seem nice. There's huge potential here which they're not exploiting.

Back home after one nights stay at the northern star hotel very disappointed no staff in the hotel need cleaning we were told there would be a full English next morning as we paid for it only to b told there’s no chef so no breakfast very poorly run business defenatly don’t recommend this hotel it’s more like a hostel tbh Jackie

Great location and was able to find street parking the next block over, which was free from 6 pm to 8 am. Sucked waking up early to get the car before 8 am. It's the first hotel room I've ever been checked in to where the room was not cleaned at all. I called the main number, and someone came and addressed the issues and cleaned the room. The phrase "you get what you pay for" fits here for sure. I went in with low expectations and came out disappointed. If the room had been clean on arrival, I would have rated 3 stars. If you want a cheap place to stay in the area, it would work.
