Sundlaug Akureyrar

Sundlaug Akureyrar is the town's main geothermal swimming pool, tucked just south of the centre on Skólastígur. Like every Icelandic sundlaug it doubles as a social hub: an outdoor 25-metre pool, a run of hot-pots at different temperatures, a steam bath and water slides that pull in families, lap-swimmers and visitors all year round. There is no dedicated gay venue in Akureyri and the pool is not a cruising spot, but communal bathing sits at the heart of Icelandic daily life and LGBTQ+ travellers are as welcome here as anywhere in this famously accepting country. Bring a swimsuit and remember the local etiquette: everyone showers without a swimsuit before getting in. It is an easy, low-key way to spend an afternoon and to feel the rhythm of the north.
