Bilbao Pride — held under the banner of Euskal Herria Pride to reflect its identity as the pride celebration of the Basque Country as a whole rather than the city alone — takes place in late June or early July and draws approximately 50,000 participants and spectators to the streets of Bilbao. The event is organised primarily by Gehitu, the Basque LGBTQ+ organisation, and has a character that reflects the specific political and cultural identity of the Basque Country: Basque flags and ikurriñas alongside rainbow flags, Euskara language visibility throughout the programming, and the particular seriousness with which the Basque LGBTQ+ movement has engaged with the wider political project of Basque self-determination. The parade route passes through the Casco Viejo and the Ensanche, connecting the old-town gay bar cluster with the modern commercial district; the Guggenheim Museum's riverfront provides a spectacular backdrop for parts of the route. Pride week events extend across Bilbao's gay venues — Medea, Shangri-La, and the Ensanche bars — and include cultural programming, film screenings, and community gatherings organised by Gehitu. For visitors to the Basque Country in late June, Bilbao Pride is the opportunity to experience a pride event with a distinct national and cultural identity that no other Spanish pride event offers.
