The honest summary: Bern has one gay bar, two gay saunas, a monthly queer party that has run since 1992, and the offices of Switzerland's national LGBTIQ organisations. There's no gay quarter and no strip of queer clubs. Zürich, about an hour away by train, has the bigger scene. What Bern does well is community: a dense calendar of film nights, talk groups, dance afternoons and two separate Prides.

Legal in one line

Same-sex marriage, including joint adoption, has been legal since 1 July 2022. Since 1 July 2020 the anti-discrimination article of the penal code (Art. 261bis) covers sexual orientation, though not gender identity. Gender-marker change works by self-declaration since January 2022. The age of consent is 16 for everyone. There's no federal ban on conversion therapy yet: the Federal Council said in September 2026 it was open to one, and the Bern cantonal parliament passed a motion for a cantonal ban in 2022, but we found no ban in force.

Bars and nightlife

Comeback Bar (Rathausgasse 42) is the city's only dedicated gay bar, a vaulted cellar in the Old Town that marked 25 years in 2025. The local magazine Plattform J calls it Bern's only gay bar, and that's still accurate. Its website lists Tuesday to Thursday 18:00–02:00 and Friday to Saturday 18:00–03:30, closed Sunday and Monday. The crowd is mostly men, mixed in age, mostly regulars. Reviewers mention a DJ on Saturday nights.

JAIL Bar (Gerechtigkeitsgasse 53), a few minutes down the Old Town, is a mainstream bar that Plattform J's 2024 roundup listed as gay-friendly. Treat it as a first drink, not a gay bar.

The one long-running queer party is Tolerdance at ISC Club (Neubrückstrasse 10, behind the Reitschule). It has run on the fourth Saturday of the month since 1992, alternating an electronic night with "Golden Tolerdance", a drag-and-disco night. Check tolerdance.com for the next date.

The Reitschule, Bern's self-managed cultural centre at Neubrückstrasse 8, is the other anchor. The Queersicht film festival grew out of it, and its Dachstock club hosts the festival party. Its Rössli bar is an ordinary alternative bar on most nights, with a mixed crowd. We found no current regular drag night there, so we don't list one.

Beyond that, queer nightlife in Bern is event-led. The bern.lgbt calendar is the best single place to see what's on: QUM dance afternoons, drag shows, Velvet Heat parties, Frauenbeiz evenings for women, and the hab queer bern Stammtisch.

Saunas

Bern has two gay saunas, which is a lot for a city of about 147,000.

- Aqualis (Brunnmattstrasse 21, Mattenhof, a short walk from the station). Finnish sauna, steam bath, whirlpool, private cabins and darker cruising areas. The club's site lists Sunday to Thursday 12:00–22:00, Friday 12:00–03:30 and Saturday 14:00–22:00, with themed nude and underwear nights. The real website is aqualisclub.ch; the old aqualis.ch domain no longer belongs to the club.
- Sundeck (Länggassstrasse 65, Länggasse). A sauna and wellness club for gay and bisexual men for more than forty years, with a rooftop terrace. It opens daily from noon. Tuesdays and Fridays are currently open to all genders and sexualities. Wednesdays and the first Saturday are youth days (CHF 20 for under-30s), and the second and fourth Saturdays are bear days.

Cruising

Gay guides have long listed Kleine Schanze, the park on the old ramparts next to the Federal Palace, as Bern's best-known outdoor cruising area. Older guides also mention the Dalmazi riverbank along the Aare, but we found no recent independent sources for it. Both are public spaces, not venues. Same-sex relationships are fully legal here, but sex in public places can be fined. The two saunas are the legal, dedicated option. We found no gay sex cinema or cruising shop in Bern.

Shops and community spaces

QueerBooks (Herrengasse 30, Old Town) is an LGBTQ+ bookshop with fiction, non-fiction, comics and DVDs, and it hosts readings and talks. The Queerfeministischer Raum (Schützenmattstrasse 9) is a community space that hosts the Rainbowdancer TanzBAR dance afternoons and brunches. There's no fixed opening time, so check its calendar.

Organisations

Bern is the seat of Switzerland's national queer organisations. Pink Cross (gay and bi men), LOS (lesbian and queer women) and TGNS (Transgender Network Switzerland) share an office building at Monbijoustrasse 73. The regional association hab queer bern, founded in 1972, runs talk groups for gay and bi men, an afternoon meet-up for men around 60, a trans and intersex Stammtisch and a queer church service. Its Villa Bernau is at Seftigenstrasse 243 in Wabern, part of the neighbouring municipality of Köniz. Checkpoint Bern (Schwarztorstrasse 11) offers HIV/STI testing, PrEP advice and counselling, run by Aids Hilfe Bern with partners. queerAltern Bern organises outings and a monthly QUEERSTAMM for older LGBTIQ people.

Neighbourhoods

There's no gay village. The Altstadt (Old Town) is the practical base: Comeback Bar, JAIL Bar and QueerBooks are all here, and most hotels are within walking distance. The Reitschule, the Queerfeministischer Raum and ISC Club cluster around the Schützenmatte and the start of the Lorraine quarter, just north of the station across the railway. Länggasse, the university district, has Sundeck. Monbijou and Mattenhof, south of the station, have the organisations' offices, Checkpoint and Aqualis.

Pride and annual events

- BernPride: a march through the Old Town and a free festival on the Bundesplatz in front of the Federal Palace. The 2026 edition was on Saturday 25 July and organisers counted about 10,000 people. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing; recent editions fell in late July or early August.
- CSD Bern: a separate, explicitly anti-capitalist Christopher Street Day. The 2026 march, on 16 May, drew about 1,000 people from the Schützenmatte to the Bundesplatz.
- Queersicht: Switzerland's oldest LGBTIQ film festival. The 2026 edition runs 5–8 November 2026, with screenings across Bern cinemas, the Reitschule as its home base, and a 30th-anniversary party in the Dachstock on 7 November.

Closed or changed (gone but still Googled)

- Exit Bar (Rathausgasse) and PINK (Aarbergergasse): still on some old lists. We found no trace of either operating.
- Petit Four and Samurai: former gay venues, long closed. Stufenbau and Gaskessel no longer host gay parties.
- Café Kairo and Dead End: often tagged "gay-friendly" online, but we found no independent source tying either to the community, so we don't list them.

Practical tips

- BERNMOBIL runs the trams and buses. The Old Town is compact and walkable from the station.
- Nearest major airport is Zürich (ZRH), about 1 hour 15 minutes by direct train. Bern's own airport at Belp has almost no scheduled flights.
- Currency is the Swiss franc (CHF). Cards are taken nearly everywhere, though some small bars prefer cash.
- Small bars close on Sunday and Monday. Plan your Comeback night for Tuesday to Saturday.
- Bern joined the Rainbow Cities Network in 2019. Holding hands in the city centre doesn't draw attention.

A few words in Swiss German

Grüessech (hello, Bernese style), Merci vilmal (thanks a lot), Es Bier, bitte (a beer, please), schwul (gay), lesbisch (lesbian), queer is used as is.

At a glance

- Gay bars: 1 (Comeback Bar) + 1 gay-friendly (JAIL Bar)
- Gay saunas: 2 (Aqualis, Sundeck)
- Regular queer party: Tolerdance, 4th Saturday, ISC Club
- Pride: BernPride, late July / early August; CSD Bern in May
- Film festival: Queersicht, November
- Bigger scene nearby: Zürich, about 1 hour by train

FAQ

Is Bern good for a gay weekend? For a quiet one, yes. Go out at Comeback, visit a sauna, and time your trip for a Tolerdance Saturday, BernPride or Queersicht. For clubs every night, base yourself in Zürich.

Is there a gay area? No. The Old Town has the bar and the bookshop; the Schützenmatte area around the Reitschule has the party venues.

Are the saunas men-only? Aqualis is a gay men's club. Sundeck is for gay and bi men except on Tuesdays and Fridays, which are open to all genders.

When is BernPride 2027? Not announced yet. Recent editions were in late July or early August on the Bundesplatz.

Preguntas frecuentes

Yes. Switzerland has had marriage equality since July 2022, and the penal code has banned discrimination and hate speech based on sexual orientation since 2020. Bern joined the Rainbow Cities Network in 2019. Holding hands in the city centre doesn't draw attention. Usual night-time common sense applies, as anywhere.

Bern has no gay village. The Old Town has the one gay bar, Comeback Bar on Rathausgasse, plus JAIL Bar and the QueerBooks bookshop. The Schützenmatte area by the Reitschule has ISC Club (home of Tolerdance) and the Queerfeministischer Raum. The national organisations and Checkpoint Bern are south of the station in Monbijou and Mattenhof.

Small and event-led. Comeback Bar is the only dedicated gay bar, open Tuesday to Saturday. Tolerdance at ISC Club runs on the fourth Saturday of each month and has done since 1992. Other nights come from the bern.lgbt calendar: QUM dance afternoons, drag shows, parties and the Queersicht festival party. The two gay saunas are Aqualis and Sundeck. Zürich's bigger scene is about an hour away by train.

Bern has two Prides. BernPride is the large one: a march through the Old Town and a free festival on the Bundesplatz, held on 25 July in 2026 with about 10,000 people. The 2027 date wasn't announced at the time of writing. CSD Bern, an anti-capitalist Christopher Street Day, marched on 16 May 2026. The Queersicht film festival follows in November.

No hotel in Bern markets itself as gay-only, and we don't know of any gay guesthouse in the city. Mainstream hotels are used to same-sex couples, so book as you would anywhere in Switzerland. Staying in or near the Old Town keeps you within walking distance of Comeback Bar and close to the station.

The Altstadt (Old Town) is the best base: it's central, close to the station, and has Comeback Bar, JAIL Bar and QueerBooks. Länggasse, the university district, is quieter and has Sundeck sauna. Around the Schützenmatte and Lorraine you're closest to the Reitschule and ISC Club for party nights.
