Sobre este lugar Tay — Brighton & Hove AIDS Memorial

In New Steine Gardens, at the seafront end of St James's Street — the spine of Brighton's gay village — two four-metre bronze figures rise entwined, one male, one androgynous. Seen right, their bodies and the shadow they cast trace the loop of the red AIDS ribbon. The sculpture is 'Tay', by local artist Romany Mark Bruce, who named it for his friend Paul Tay, lost in 1992. Chosen by public ballot and unveiled in October 2009 by David Furnish, it deliberately commemorates everyone affected by HIV and AIDS — not only gay men — in the city that lived the UK epidemic as intensely as anywhere. What you see today: the memorial stands freely accessible in the gardens square, ringed by Kemptown's guesthouses and bars, with the sea a hundred metres away. Brighton's World AIDS Day events centre here. Catch it in low sun, when the ribbon shadow is sharpest.
