Estación Santa Fe – Carlos Jáuregui

When Buenos Aires applied the name in March 2017, the Santa Fe–Carlos Jáuregui station on Subte Line H became the first metro station in the world named for an LGBT activist. Carlos Jáuregui was the movement's founding face in Argentina: first president of the Comunidad Homosexual Argentina (1984-87), founder of Gays por los Derechos Civiles, organiser of the country's first Pride march in 1992, dead of AIDS in 1996 at 38. Two decades later, the country that once arrested men for dancing together had marriage equality (2010, first in Latin America) and a metro station that says his name to every commuter. What you see today: rainbow-themed decoration through the platforms and mezzanine, and Venezuelan artist Daniel Arzola's 14-metre mural celebrating diversity. It costs a metro fare to visit — surely the cheapest world-first in queer heritage — and sits in Recoleta, an easy stop en route to anywhere. Argentina's Pride marches still carry Jáuregui's slogan: 'En una sociedad que nos educa para la vergüenza, el orgullo es una respuesta política.'
