Sobre este lugar La Avispa

La Avispa ("the wasp") is one of the oldest gay venues in Central America, running in San José since the late 1970s. It started with a strong lesbian identity and today pulls a mixed crowd of women, gay men and friends across a wide age range. The music is mostly Latin pop, salsa, merengue and reggaeton, and people come to dance. Weekend nights are the main event; weeknights can be very quiet. It sits in the old downtown near Barrio Amón, an area where you should take a taxi or rideshare late at night rather than walk. Prices are local-bar cheap.

The atmosphere is changeable, it's not the same as before, consumption is somewhat expensive, the area isn't safe to walk around in, especially if you're a tourist, which is normal for cities due to its location far from the center.

Gringos beware! It could be fun if the service wasn't so bad. The bartenders are terrible. Especially the larger short lesbian with a Mohawk. She will not serve you if you're gringo until she ignores you 5 or 6 times to serve someone else. And then she took my drink, I hadn't even had a sip of it. I asked for a replacement and she refused to acknowledge me. The management talked to her, and she lied to say someone else took it. And they refused to replace it. Ruined my night. Terrible service and management. One of the waitresses bumped into someone dancing and brought the management over to threaten him for touching her inappropriately. It was ridiculous. Spare yourself and stay home if there's nothing else to do. I'll never go back. Could be fun if the service wasn't so bad. The bartenders are terrible. Especially the short, thick, lesbian girl with the mohawk. If you're a foreigner, they won't serve you until after ignoring you five or six times to attend to other people. Also, they took my drink away before I'd even taken a sip. I asked for it back, and they simply refused. Management spoke to her, and she lied, saying someone else had taken it. In the end, they refused to replace it. They ruined my night. Terrible service and awful management. One of the waitresses bumped into someone who was dancing and then called management to threaten him, saying he had touched her inappropriately. It was ridiculous. Save yourself the trouble and stay home if there's nothing else to do. I'll never go back.
