I had the absolute perfect experience during my stay! All the staff (checkin, kitchen and dining room, concierge, and housekeeping) were elite. 10/10.

A very nice historic hotel with good service. The rooms were very spacious and super clean throughout. The buffet was varied and delicious, and the fruit was very fresh. The location is convenient for getting around easily if you want to explore San José.

The hotel was centrally located, walking distance to several areas of interest. I was also single female solo traveler and walked around at night and felt completely safe around the hotel and other areas, there were security people everywhere. The hotel was clean, the restaurant was nice, food was good. Breakfast had large assortment of different foods so it would be difficult to not find something for every taste bud. I also saw comments about no privacy for bathroom, Although I was alone, it was not as dramatic as people said. Yes it is frosted glass for shower and toilet area, but seems you would have to be pressed right up against it to actually see anything. Does it make sense to have frosted glass? No, but its not a deal breaker. I also read comments that 5th floor was cold in restaurant, temp seemed fine to me. And I never experienced any problems with WIFI/Internet connections inside/outside room, or anywhere around the city.

Great location. Disappointing showers and lack of robes but very friendly staff and walkable to many sites. Definitely check out the National Theatre!

There's no spa, but the staff are very attentive. There is a gym.

Very bad reception on May 8, 2026 by the two male attendants in the lobby. Walking with friends through downtown San José. Stopped by the hotel and asked the attedants a question (in Spanish) about its history. They completely ignored us. As if we were not there. They were totally rude to a potential guest. Perhaps we did not look the part.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Our stay at Gran Hotel Costa Rica was absolutely incredible from start to finish. The hotel has the perfect combination of elegance, comfort, and authentic Costa Rican hospitality. The location is unbeatable, right in the heart of San José and within walking distance of so many attractions. A very special thank you to Juan Carlos, the manager, for making our experience truly memorable. His professionalism, attention to detail, and genuine care for guests really stand out. You can tell he leads an amazing team, because every single staff member we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and always willing to help with a smile. We also loved the tour desk experience. The team there helped us organize amazing tours and activities, making everything super easy and stress-free. Their recommendations were excellent and helped us experience the best of Costa Rica. Highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting San José. We will definitely be back! 🇨🇷✨
