Grant Park

I've been coming here since 1964. I was born that year and don't remember anything until years later but my mom brought us here all the time. I remember the zoo from when I was younger and I remember the park very well from probably 5 on up...we lived off Cogar Drive in Decatur and we were here often. It is nice to see trees and flora that are older than yourself, and know that they have older and also fond memories of the park. I hope this park lasts far beyond my life and memories, and far beyond the memories of my children, and their children. We have one last place to plant our feet as humans, and places of solace, imagination, spiritual cleansing and nourishment like this should be left to thrive and survive... and we as stewards of such splendor, should be benign human beings, not malignant human doings.

We came to the zoo atlanta before they opened and walked to Grant Park which is adjacent. It is a bit of a steep climb. The paths are nice but the bathrooms were nasty and the huge rolls of tp were chained to the ceiling with huge thick chains. That was a bit of a turn off but we were glad we were able to visit Grant Park as part of our day at the zoo. The earlier you come to the zoo, the better parking spots are available.

Grant Park offers an array of spaces to engage the whole family: public pool, basketball courts, tennis court, field for baseball and kickball, playground, etc. and plenty of shade for those extremely hot Atlanta days. This past Thursday, I went with my family (ages: 17, 13, 8, 8, 7) and we had a ball creating our own obstacle courses around the playground. Then, we just went for a light stroll around the park. NOTE: The Atlanta Zoo is located within the park.

Grant Park was the go to park in the late 1970s & 1980s for simple “fun and hanging out” although historically its been around since the 1800s. Currently it is in transition with renovations that have occurred since the 1990s including recent construction. There is also an attached zoo. What’s problematic at this park as opposed to Piedmont is parking & that “fun” element. Unlike Piedmont Park, also in Atlanta, Grant Park comes up with innovative ways to free people of their money. It’s cool to have a zoo if that’s your thing, but they are also building a reputation of hosting paid events that used to be free. Recently they hosted a “gated” house music at Grant Park event. There was one table for expected thousands of people coming into the city. There is very little information about park rules on the website particularly for special events. They definitely need a webmaster. Even as locals we were confused about how to answer questions about House at the Park & the challenges with finding accurate information or even a phone number to call. Unfortunately, I would not recommend Grant Park at all over Piedmont. Piedmont just feels good, so it must be right. Grant Park feels contrived.

We spend Labor Day weekend 2017 here and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Saturday was a concert of some sort and Sunday was House in the Park. Both days had great music, food and vibe. Great neighborhood all around.

the Cyclorama and the zoo are here. Besides that it is a nice park. If I were traveling with kids I'd go here. You don't have to visit the cyclorama but it is unique and uniquely Atlanta.

Our waitress at Ria's Bluebird told us about the Grant Neighborhood. Decorated in Halloween fair. A few trees have demolished homes in this area. Walked around and through this neighborhood. As we conversed with very kind community members.

Very nice, green and remarkable quiet spot in the middle of a busy area. Nice for a picnic before or after the zoo. Big spaces for kids to run around. Many families there playing games.

This used to be a beautiful park. Still could be, but no one knows how to use a trash can anymore. I was so disappointed.

This park was very shady and a comfortable place to meet. We had a 5K run for a campaign. And though the run had hills and down hills, it was a pleasure. Lots of trees for shade. If you want to meet friends or just enjoy an afternoon in nature, this is the place to meet and be.
