These artists will come together to discuss Eichmann and Arnal’s collaborative performance presented as an activation for the “residue…what remains” exhibition curated by Sue Schroeder for Leicester Gallery, De Montfort University in Leicester, UK, from February 6 to June 7, 2026.
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE
American percussionist Jeff Arnal and German composer and pianist Dietrich Eichmann have been playing free improvisations as a duo since 2002. Despite the geographical distance they have enjoyed continuous collaboration and have performed at venues such as the Goethe Institute NYC, Zeitgeist Gallery Boston, Improvised and Otherwise, Brooklyn/NY, Zeitgeist Gallery Cambridge/MA, University of Pittsburgh, Bennington College/VT, DeSingel Antwerp, Radio Bremen, Exploratorium Berlin, Phenomorphonic Hamburg, Les rencontres musique et littérature Paris, Neue Musik im Fläming NMIF, and Improdimensija Vilnius.
Over the past 20 years, their music has constantly renewed and reformulated itself; during a tour in 2023, Arnal & Eichmann increasingly defined their current state of aggregation as a physical installation in space with sculptural and colourful approaches.
There is a proximity here to the work of Stefan Wolpe, who had close ties to the Bauhaus and was director of the music department at Black Mountain College from 1952 to 1956. As executive director of the Black Mountain College Museum in Asheville, NC, Jeff Arnal regularly curates, writes and lectures on the extraordinary legacy of BMC and the musicians and artists who worked there, including John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Lou Harrison, David Tudor and Stefan Wolpe, whom Dietrich Eichmann counts among his most important influences as a composer.
To mark the centenary of the opening of the Bauhaus Dessau in 1926, Eichmann has composed the ‘Concerto for Orchestra, Percussion & Piano’, which will be premiered on 7 and 8 February, 2026 with the Saxony-Anhalt State Youth Orchestra in Halle (Germany). The conductor is Michael Wendeberg, and the soloists are Jeff Arnal and Dietrich Eichmann, who will improvise freely in dialogue with the composed orchestral parts.
