The LGBT Community Center

The Center, as New Yorkers call it, has occupied a 19th-century former public school at 208 West 13th Street since 1983. It runs support groups, recovery meetings, health and social services, youth and family programmes, and cultural events, and dozens of LGBTQ+ organisations have met or started in its rooms. Its most famous moment came in March 1987, when Larry Kramer spoke there and ACT UP was founded days later. In 1989 Keith Haring painted the mural Once Upon a Time on the walls of a second-floor restroom, and it is still preserved.
