Revisit the curiosity, mischief, and confusion of childhood in Dicky Dutton and Heather Jones’ NEVER LAND, a captivating drag cabaret that delves into themes of queer escapism inspired by Peter Pan. This theatrical experience explores the gender binary of mother versus pirate, highlighting the conflicts that arise when characters like Hook and Wendy attempt to sever their assigned identities to break free from a haunted fairy tale. As they navigate their journey, they discover that liberation requires connection, leading them to try on various identities-Pirate and mother? A no go. Pirate and pirate? Perhaps. Pirate and fairy? Absolutely! With familiar tunes from the 1950 Bernstein and Rittman Broadway productions interspersed with new songs and incidental music by Michael Lewis, this performance transports audiences to a whimsical yet dark allegory of childhood imagination. The show began as a classical recital centered on the themes of escaping constricting identities and the consequences of staying or leaving. After a workshop with Amanda + James Productions, it evolved into a fully fleshed cabaret that showcases the friendship between the two singers and their flair for serious clownery, enhanced by stage direction from Rose Freeman.
