Sobre este lugar Compton's Cafeteria Riot Site

One August night in 1966 — the exact date was never recorded — police tried to arrest a transgender woman inside Gene Compton's Cafeteria, a 24-hour Tenderloin hangout for drag queens and trans women who were unwelcome almost everywhere else. She threw her coffee in the officer's face, and the room erupted: cups and trays flew, windows shattered, a police car was wrecked. It was the first known instance of collective, militant queer and trans resistance to police harassment in American history, three years before Stonewall. The riot had concrete aftereffects: by 1968 San Francisco had the National Transsexual Counseling Unit, the first peer-run transgender support organization in the world. The story itself was nearly lost until historian Susan Stryker's research and the 2005 documentary Screaming Queens recovered it. Recognition has accelerated since. A commemorative sidewalk plaque was dedicated at the corner of Turk and Taylor in 2006; the block became "Gene Compton's Cafeteria Way" in 2016; the surrounding blocks were designated the Transgender District in 2017 — the world's first legally recognized transgender cultural district; the building became SF City Landmark #307 in 2022; and in January 2025 the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the first US site so recognized for transgender civil-rights history. What you see today: the plaque and street sign at Turk & Taylor. The 1907 building itself now houses a residential facility and cannot be entered; community campaigners (the TurkxTaylor Initiative) are working to reclaim it. Come for the corner, the plaque and the district's murals — and know you are standing where the fight visibly began.
