Umekoji Park (Cruising Area)

Umekoji Park, the large green space just west of Kyoto Station, has a long-standing reputation as a late-night gay cruising spot, with activity centred on the park's restrooms and the quieter benches along the old railway edge. By day it is an ordinary family park with a museum and aquarium, so discretion after dark is essential. Japan does not criminalise homosexuality and police rarely trouble consensual encounters, but this is tolerated rather than official use of a public space — keep noise down, respect other park users and stay aware of your surroundings at night.
