Telephone Pub

Telephone Pub opened at 114/11-13 Silom Soi 4 in 1987 as Bangkok's first dedicated gay bar on Silom Road. It is Bangkok's oldest continuously operating gay bar — 38 years of unbroken service — and among the very earliest openly-marketed gay bars in Southeast Asia. The pub's founding gimmick — from which the name derives — was table telephones. Each of the roughly 40 tables carries a telephone connected to every other table in the room; patrons dial each other's tables to introduce themselves. The system was novel in 1987, familiar by 2005, and by the 2020s functions as a piece of nostalgic operational theatre that regulars love. The phones continue to work and are still used. Telephone Pub anchors the Silom Soi 4 gay nightlife strip by both physical location (the storefront is directly at the alley's central corner) and continuous operation. Its role in Bangkok queer history is inseparable from Silom Soi 4's development — the pub predates the alley's gay-street identity by roughly seven years, and every subsequent queer venue on the alley opened around it.
