Gelsenkirchen's Christopher Street Day is one of the Ruhr's scrappiest and most defiant: organized by the together queer youth centre, it fills the Alter Markt each May with a demo, stage programme and street festival. The 2025 edition was cancelled over a threat situation — and the 2026 return in May was exactly the answer the city needed, marching anyway. Time a visit for mid-May and pair it with the Queerfilmfestival at Kulturraum die flora in September; between them, this working-class football city has more queer life than its reputation suggests.
