Let's be honest about Rhodes before you pack: this is a one-bar island. The medieval Old Town and the neon sprawl of the New Town hold plenty of nightlife, but the dedicated gay scene comes down to a single venue, a couple of welcoming favourites, and a famous stretch of beach by day. What Rhodes lacks in volume it makes up for in the easy, unbothered feel of a Greek island where same-sex couples barely draw a second glance.
Reina Gay Bar & Club is the heart of it — the island's only dedicated gay bar, tucked along Georgiou Mavrou in the New Town. It runs seasonally, roughly from spring into October, opening late and staying loud until the early hours. Expect drag shows several nights a week, go-go dancers in high season, and a friendly mix of locals and travellers. If you make just one gay night out on Rhodes, this is it.
Mango Bar offers the opposite mood: a relaxed, long-running cafe-bar inside the Old Town walls that has welcomed LGBTQ+ visitors for years. It is gay-friendly rather than a gay bar, but it's a lovely, low-key spot for a cocktail and conversation away from the tourist crush, and its perch on a quiet medieval square is hard to beat for an early-evening drink.
For a view, L'Eternel French Bar is a gay-welcoming rooftop in the Old Town pairing wine, piano and a romantic terrace. Again, it's friendly rather than exclusively gay, but it rounds out a short and genuine list of places where you will feel at home.
A word on what you might read elsewhere: Orfanidou Street, the famous "Bar Street" in the New Town, is a straight tourist strip of rock bars and shot joints, not a gay district. The old Berlin Gay Bar, once billed as Greece's first gay bar, has closed. There are no gay clubs, no gay sauna and no cruising bar on the island; after dark the scene really is Reina plus the apps.
By day, the social centre of gay Rhodes shifts to Mandomata Beach at the southern end of Faliraki bay, the island's one nudist beach, where the far rocky end is the long-established gay spot. For anything bigger — clubs, saunas, a proper circuit scene — Athens is a short flight away. Rhodes, meanwhile, is for slow, sunlit days and one very good bar at night.
