Gayxample — Quartiere Gay dell'Eixample

Gayxample (a portmanteau of "gay" and "Eixample") is the name locals use for the six-block section of the Eixample bounded roughly by Passeig de Gràcia to the east, Muntaner to the west, and the parallel streets of Consell de Cent and Diputació. Since roughly 1990 it has been Barcelona's dedicated LGBTQ+ commercial neighbourhood — the highest concentration of queer bars, cafés, hotels and shops in Spain and one of the densest queer commercial districts in Europe. The neighbourhood emerged after the 1992 Barcelona Olympics accelerated the Eixample's general commercialisation, and gay-friendly businesses opened along the wide grid streets Ildefons Cerdà had planned in the 1860s. Anchor venues include Punto BCN (opened 1994), Metro (1990), Aire (1996 — one of the earliest lesbian dance clubs in southern Europe), the Axel Hotel (2003 — Barcelona's first hetero-friendly gay hotel), and the Casa Milà queer-history apartments (a heritage tour by Casa Milà itself, monthly). The Ajuntament de Barcelona formally recognised Gayxample as an "LGTBI commercial neighbourhood" in 2015 and installed permanent rainbow crosswalks at the Consell de Cent / Muntaner intersection (the district's densest corner). During Pride Barcelona (mid-June) the district's streets close for a day of programming and the rainbow crosswalks become the parade's photo-op backdrop. Free public streets, 24/7. Gay bars typically open at 20:00; peak crowd 23:00-03:00 on weekends. Universitat metro (five minutes' walk) and Passeig de Gràcia both serve the district. Combine with a walk south to the Museu de l'Erotisme on La Rambla or east to the Gothic Quarter's Casal Lambda for a full-day queer geography.
