Il grande hotel Estimar sul lungomare, situato sulla spiaggia di Arenal-Bol nel cuore di Calp, sede della Spa Edén; 4,7 stelle su quasi 8.000 recensioni Google.
The honest summary: Calp (Calpe in Spanish) has no gay bar, no gay club, no gay sauna and no cruising area we could confirm. It's a beach town of about 27,600 people under the Penyal d'Ifac, the big limestone rock on the Costa Blanca. Its one gay guesthouse has closed. Come for the beaches, the rock and the seafood, and treat Benidorm, about 24 km south, as your night out. The town does run a small municipal Pride, CalPride, every June.
Legal in one line: Same-sex relations are legal in Spain, same-sex marriage and adoption have been legal since 2005, discrimination is banned by national law, and the Valencian Community has its own LGTBI equality law.
About the town
Calp sits in the Marina Alta district of Alicante province, between Altea to the south and Benissa and Moraira to the north. INE put the population at 27,616 on 1 January 2025, and a large share of residents are northern European retirees and second-home owners, so you'll hear Dutch, German and English on the seafront as often as Spanish or Valencian. Everything centres on the Penyal d'Ifac (332 m), which splits the coast into two main beaches: Arenal-Bol on the south side, by the old town, and La Fossa-Levante on the north side, lined with apartment towers.
Where the scene actually is
Not in Calp. We searched English and Spanish sources (Travel Gay, Patroc, misterb&b, gaymap.es, local press) and found no bar, club or sauna in town that presents itself as gay or appears in any gay guide. Some old listings, including earlier versions of this site, tagged ordinary Calp bars as gay. We've removed those; none of them had any LGBTQ+ connection we could verify.
Same-sex couples rarely get a second look on the seafront or in the old town, and the restaurants and beach bars are used to a very international crowd. That's a normal Spanish resort, not a gay scene.
For actual gay nightlife, go to Benidorm. It has the Costa Blanca's largest cluster of gay bars, drag shows and saunas, most of them in the old town around Calle Santo Domingo. See our Benidorm guide for what's open now.
Getting to Benidorm (and back)
- TRAM d'Alacant Line 9: since 28 January 2025 trains run straight through from Dénia to Benidorm via Calp and Altea, with no change, after the line was rebuilt. Calp has its own station. Check the last train back before you go out, because Benidorm's bars keep going much later than the tram.
- ALSA buses link Calp bus station with Benidorm in about 25 minutes, and also run to Alicante, Valencia and Alicante airport.
- A taxi covers the 24 km in about 25 minutes. It's the realistic option after midnight.
Closed or changed
- Casa La Diferencia, the gay men-only guesthouse on Urbanització Canuta de Ifach, is listed by Google as permanently closed, and its last Google review dates from 2020. The house now trades as Boutique Casa Lapicida, an adults-only B&B that doesn't market itself as gay. Some booking sites still show the old name.
- Calp bar listings labelled "gay" on older aggregator pages (Club 7, GOA, El Canibal, Monastery Latino, Acuarios, Jardín 2016) are mainstream bars.
Beaches
- Arenal-Bol is the town beach: wide sand, full services, and a seafront promenade with restaurants. It's mixed and family-heavy in summer.
- La Fossa and Levante, on the north side of the rock, are longer and more built up.
- Les Urques, Cala del Racó, Calalga and Cala del Mallorquí are small rocky coves, good for snorkelling.
- Naturists usually head south across the municipal border to Altea's Mascarat coves (Cala del Mascarat and Cala de la Barra Grande), which are traditionally clothing-optional. They are mixed naturist beaches, not gay beaches, and we found no source describing them as gay.
The Penyal d'Ifac
The rock is a natural park, and the summit trail (about 4.6 km round trip) climbs through a short tunnel to a rocky final section with ropes. Since December 2020 you have to book a free slot online in advance; numbers are capped at 300 per day, and you can book up to 10 days ahead. The section past the tunnel isn't recommended for under-18s or in rain or fog. Wear proper shoes.
Pride & Events
Pride and events
- CalPride is Calp's own Pride, organised by the Ajuntament (town council) in late June. The 2025 edition, "La mar de lliure", had a speech from the town hall balcony, a march to Plaça Colón and performances there. The 2026 edition was on 26 June. Dates for 2027 had not been announced at the time of writing.
- Benidorm Pride is the big regional event, usually in early September. The 2026 edition ran 1–6 September with the parade on Saturday 5 September, and the festival has announced 1–5 September 2027 for next year.
- Calp has no regular gay party nights, and we found no LGBTQ+ association based in the town.
Where to Stay
Where to stay
Most visitors stay along Arenal-Bol, near the port, or in the towers on Levante. On this site you'll find big seafront hotels such as Gran Hotel Sol y Mar, AR Diamante Beach and AR Roca Esmeralda, the boutique Cookbook hotel up in Marisol Park, and smaller places in town like Hotel Porto Calpe, Hotel Calp and Maravillas del Mundo. None of them is a gay hotel. If you want gay nightlife on your doorstep, stay in Benidorm instead and visit Calp for a day.
Practical tips
- Airport: Alicante-Elche (ALC) is roughly 75–80 km away by the AP-7, under an hour by car; ALSA runs direct buses. Valencia airport is about 150 km.
- Season: July and August are hot and crowded. May, June, September and October are the best months for beaches and the rock. In winter the town is quiet and the long-stay retirees take over.
- Apps: Grindr and similar apps work normally here and are how most local gay men meet, given there are no venues.
- Safety: Spain is one of Europe's safest countries for LGBTQ+ travellers. The usual resort cautions apply: watch your phone and wallet on busy beaches.
A few words
Valencian and Spanish are both official. "Bon dia" (good morning, Valencian), "gràcies" (thank you), "on és la platja?" (where's the beach?). In Spanish, "ambiente" is the old slang for the gay scene, as in "¿hay ambiente aquí?"
At a glance
- Gay bars: none in Calp; Benidorm is 24 km south
- Gay saunas: none in Calp; Benidorm has several
- Gay beach: none; naturist coves at Mascarat (Altea)

- Getting around: TRAM Line 9 and ALSA buses to Benidorm, Altea and Dénia
