The honest summary: Istanbul has two men's saunas that gay guides still list, Aquarius off İstiklal and Cihangir Sauna down the hill in Cihangir. Both are small, a little worn, and both now work under heavier police attention than at any time in the last decade. The city's famous hamams are not part of this scene. They are public baths, and that is how you should treat them.

Legal in one line: sex between adult men has been legal in Turkey since 1858 and the age of consent is 18 for everyone, but there is no anti-discrimination law, Pride has been banned since 2015, and police can use vague public-morality and "obscenity" rules against venues and the people in them.

Read this first: autumn 2026

On the night of 12–13 September 2026 police across 15 provinces ran an operation that prosecutors called "Ailem Güvende" ("My Family Is Safe"). FIDH counted 116 people detained and 82 held in pre-trial detention. In Istanbul, officers raided nightclubs and massage businesses in Beyoğlu and Şişli, the same streets this guide covers, and the next morning entered the offices of LGBTI+ associations. Reports do not publish a full list of the businesses involved, so we don't name any here. In June the Beyoğlu district governorate had already sealed Tek Yön, one of the city's oldest gay clubs.

What that means for a visitor: the two saunas below were still trading on Google at our last check, but conditions can change from one week to the next. Check recent reviews on the day, carry your passport, and leave if anything about a visit feels wrong.

The two men's saunas

Aquarius Sauna · Sadri Alışık Sokak No. 29/1, Beyoğlu

The one every guide names, on a side street off İstiklal Caddesi about seven minutes' walk from Taksim Square. Travel Gay and Spartacus describe a dry sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, small pool, a basic gym, private cabins, massage and a café-bar, and its Google listing gives the hours as 24 hours a day. The crowd is mostly local men plus visitors staying around Taksim, and late evening after the bars close is when it fills.

Reviews from 2025–26 are split. Some visitors found it clean with friendly staff. Others found it dirty and nearly empty, and many describe masseurs who push paid extras hard. Agree any price before a service starts, say no clearly if you don't want one, and lock your phone and cash away. Google rating: about 3.1 from roughly 400 reviews.

Cihangir Sauna · Altıpatlar Sokak No. 8, Cihangir

A smaller, older sauna in the café quarter below Taksim. Its own Google listing calls it one of Istanbul's oldest saunas, with about 500 m² of space, a sauna, steam and rest rooms, open 10:00 to 23:00 daily. Afternoons and early evenings are the busiest. The crowd skews local and older. The sauna's old website domain has lapsed, so the Google listing (phone +90 212 243 06 93) is the most current source; check it before you walk down the hill. Google rating: about 3.6 from roughly 400 reviews.

Gone or not confirmed: Pinokyo, which some older pages list next to the saunas, is a terrace bar on Büyük Parmakkapı Sokak, not a sauna. The old Çavuş Hamamı in Balat closed in early 2025. We have not listed any other venue because we could not confirm one with two current sources.

Hamams: what they are, and what they are not

A historic hamam is not a gay sauna. Istanbul's Ottoman bathhouses, including the well-known ones in Beyoğlu, Karaköy and Sultanahmet, are working baths used by families, neighbourhood regulars and coachloads of tourists. Travel Gay itself notes that the city's hamams "are not gay venues". Any cruising or sexual behaviour in a traditional hamam can get you thrown out, bring in the police and put the staff at risk too. Go for the history, the hot marble and the scrub.

    • How it works: men and women use separate sections or separate hours. You undress in a cubicle and wrap yourself in a peştemal, the checked cotton cloth, and it stays on the whole time, including on the heated marble platform (göbek taşı).
    • The scrub: an attendant (tellak) works you over with a coarse mitt, the kese, then a foam wash. It is firm. Say yavaş ("gently") if you need to.
    • Prices: the famous historic baths such as Cağaloğlu price per package for tourists. Ask what is included before you go in, and tip the attendant in cash if you were happy.
    • Manners: no photos of other bathers, keep your voice down. It is a bath, not a bar.

    Practical tips

    • Money: agree the total before any massage or "extra". Keep some Turkish lira in cash; card machines at small venues sometimes belong to another company, so check the name on the terminal.
    • ID: carry your passport or a photo of it with another photo ID. Police checks around Taksim are frequent at night and more frequent after the September operation.
    • Taxis: give the street name, not the venue name. Use licensed yellow taxis or BiTaksi, meter on.
    • Phones and photos: no photos inside or outside, no check-ins or tagged posts. The June 2026 closure of Tek Yön began with a newspaper story built from social media.
    • Apps: Grindr has been blocked since 2013 and courts blocked Hornet, Scruff, Romeo and others in June 2026. Locals use a VPN; install and test one before you fly. Meet app contacts in a busy café first, never at an unknown flat.
    • Health: bring your own condoms and lube. If you need PEP, go to the emergency department of a large hospital within 72 hours. Kadıköy Municipality opened a free, anonymous HIV test centre in July 2026.
    • Emergency: 112 for police, ambulance and fire.

    A few words of Turkish

    • Ne kadar? – how much?
    • Hayır, teşekkürler – no, thank you.
    • Yavaş – gently.
    • Peştemal – the hamam wrap; kese – the scrubbing mitt.
    • Hesap, lütfen – the bill, please.

Frequently asked questions

Are there gay saunas in Istanbul?

Two men's saunas are still listed by gay guides: Aquarius Sauna off İstiklal Caddesi and Cihangir Sauna in Cihangir. Both were trading on Google at our last check in October 2026, but police raided venues in Beyoğlu and Şişli in September 2026, so check recent reviews on the day.

Are Istanbul's hamams gay meeting places?

No. Historic hamams are traditional baths used by families, locals and tourists. Any sexual behaviour there risks expulsion, police involvement and danger to you and the staff. Go for the scrub and the architecture.

Is Aquarius Sauna open 24 hours?

Its Google listing and Travel Gay give 24 hours, every day. Older listings show afternoon-to-midnight hours, so if you plan a very late or very early visit, check the listing that day.

Is it safe to visit a gay sauna in Istanbul?

Many visitors go without trouble, but the risk rose after the September 2026 police operation. Carry ID, take only what you need, agree prices up front, take no photos and keep affection inside the venue.
