Austin Pride is the annual LGBTQ+ pride celebration for the Austin community, held each August with a parade along Congress Avenue — one of the most symbolically significant locations for a pride march in any American city, given the backdrop of Texas's political context for LGBTQ+ rights. The event draws approximately 40,000 participants to the Congress Avenue corridor and surrounding areas for the parade, followed by a festival with multiple stages, community organisations, food vendors, and the full range of activities associated with a major pride celebration. August in Austin is hot — temperatures can exceed 38°C — but the event draws committed participants who understand that visibility in Texas is a political act as much as a celebration. Austin Pride is operated by Austin Pride, the non-profit organisation that has been producing the event since 1997 and that coordinates the broader Pride Month programming including events in partnership with Austin's bars, organisations, and cultural venues.
