SXSW non è un evento queer. È l'enorme settimana di conferenze, proiezioni di film, TV e musica di Austin, e nel 2025 gli organizzatori hanno contato 309.300 partecipanti. Si trova su un sito di viaggi gay perché la settimana porta un vero e proprio strato di programmazione LGBTQ+ che è facile da perdere all'interno del programma principale: film queer nella lineup del festival, artisti queer nelle showcase musicali e una serie di feste organizzate da gruppi locali piuttosto che da SXSW stesso.
La maggior parte del programma ufficiale è dietro un costoso badge. Il lato queer è più facile da raggiungere. L'Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce pubblica una guida LGBTQ+ alla settimana e organizza il Big Queer Kickoff Party; la 13ª edizione si è tenuta il 13 marzo 2026 al Rain on 4th, con la partecipazione di Bebe Zahara Benet, la prima vincitrice di RuPaul's Drag Race. I possessori di badge hanno la priorità, ma possono entrare anche persone senza badge. La guida del 2026 elencava anche un pranzo drag Tacos & Tiaras con il festival cinematografico aGLIFF, talk di business LGBTQ+, incontri giornalieri e titoli queer nel programma cinematografico come Leviticus e The Dads.
In pratica, questa è la settimana alberghiera più costosa dell'anno ad Austin. L'edizione del 2026 è stata ridotta da nove a sette giorni, e i dati di Visit Austin riportati da Axios hanno mostrato quasi il 20% in meno di camere d'albergo vendute. Con il centro congressi chiuso per ricostruzione, gli eventi sono distribuiti in varie sedi del centro, quindi scegli un hotel da cui puoi raggiungere a piedi. Se desideri solo le serate queer, la festa della Chamber e i bar gay lungo West 4th Street funzionano senza badge.
L'ultima edizione si è svolta dal 12 al 18 marzo 2026. SXSW ha annunciato ufficialmente il 2027 dal 13 al 21 marzo, con SXSW EDU dal 13 al 16 marzo e le principali conferenze e festival dal 15 al 21 marzo. Il programma queer della Chamber viene solitamente pubblicato solo poche settimane prima.
