168 York Street Cafe is New Haven's long-running gay bar and restaurant, a few steps from the Yale campus. It is a neighbourhood place more than a club, with conversation, drinks and food and a crowd heavy on regulars, known locally as New Haven's gay Cheers. Joey Goodwin ran it for about 35 years before handing it to new management in 2026. It opens at 16:00 Tuesday to Sunday and closes late, until 01:00 on Friday and 02:00 on Saturday and Sunday. It is closed on Mondays. Weekend nights are busiest, and Yale term time brings a younger crowd.

I really enjoyed this place! The owner and bartender were very nice and I enjoyed the pub-like. It was the perfect place to go after a long day of work. It wasn’t crowded and it felt like a very personalized experience. The atmosphere felt welcoming, and I felt comfortable as a visitor from out of town.
