A beautiful, small, family-run hotel on the outskirts of town, lovingly decorated. The staff were very helpful and dedicated in planning our excursions. The rooms are quite small, but we found this to be cozy rather than bothersome. The à la carte breakfast is excellent, fresh, and varied. The only downside is the parking situation. There is no hotel parking lot. However, you can park in the public parking garage next door. (It can get quite full at certain times.)
The V&A Waterfront is still the one place in Cape Town that actually lives up to the hype. It's busy — always — but for good reason. You've got Table Mountain on one side, working harbour on the other, and everything in between just works. Good mix of tourist shops and proper shops (Woolworths, Pick n Pay for the basics, plus all the souvenir stuff), street musicians everywhere, seals hanging around the boats, and you can just sit with a coffee and watch the world go by. Food is the highlight for me. The Food Market is great if you want a bit of everything without a sit-down restaurant price, and then you've got everything from fish and chips on the wharf to the higher-end spots if you want to make an evening of it. Sunset from there is hard to beat. Downsides: It's tourist-priced. Parking can be a mission on weekends and school holidays, and you will walk a lot more than you planned. It also feels a bit mall-like in parts once you're away from the water. If you go: go early, park at Battery or Silo and walk in, and don't try to do it all in one afternoon. It's best for a slow wander, not a rush. 4.5/5 — touristy, yes, but it's touristy because it's genuinely good.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The room and hotel were charming and nice. The neighborhood was really hip and fun.
Beautiful hotel in a fantastic part of Cape Town - surrounded by great bars, eateries and colourful buildings. A short walk from V&A Waterside. The room was on the small side, but possibly the most comfortable bed I’ve slept in for a long time!
We chose The Grey Hotel primarily because of its location, which is excellent for exploring Cape Town. I also want to say that the staff were incredibly kind, friendly, and welcoming throughout our stay. Unfortunately, the hotel itself did not live up to our expectations. The biggest issue is that the property feels much more like a slightly elevated hostel than a boutique hotel. The rooms are very small and, in our experience, simply not comfortable for two people, particularly if you have luggage. There are also very few frills or amenities, so it is important to understand what you are booking. We were especially disappointed to discover only after arriving that the rooftop pool and bar were closed for a five-month renovation. This was a significant amenity and one of the reasons we had chosen the property, so we really felt this should have been communicated clearly before arrival. The restaurant downstairs also does not serve alcohol, which was another surprise. We had originally booked five nights but ultimately left after just one night and moved to another hotel. To be clear, this is not a criticism of the staff. They were lovely. The issue is simply that the property was not what we expected based on how we perceived it when booking. If you are looking for a very basic, well-located place to sleep while spending most of your time out exploring Cape Town, The Grey may work well for you. But if you are expecting a comfortable boutique hotel experience with amenities, space, and a little luxury, I would recommend looking elsewhere. My biggest advice: just make sure you know exactly what you are getting into before booking.
