The honest summary: Cape Town is the easiest city in Africa to be openly gay in, and it has the continent's best-known gay village, but the bar scene is smaller in 2026 than the old guides suggest. De Waterkant still has Café Manhattan, Crew Bar and The Pink Candy within a few blocks of each other. Several long-running names have closed, though, and a lot of the newer queer nightlife now happens at parties in Observatory, Gardens and District Six rather than in the village itself.

Legal in one line: sex between men and between women is legal with an equal age of consent of 16 (the sodomy laws were struck down on 9 October 1998). South Africa's interim Constitution of 1993 and the final one of 1996 ban discrimination on sexual orientation, same-sex couples have been able to marry under the Civil Union Act since 30 November 2006, and a hate-crimes act was signed in May 2024 but is still waiting to come into force.

De Waterkant, the gay village

De Waterkant is a small grid of cobbled lanes and restored 19th-century cottages between the city centre, the Bo-Kaap and Green Point, with Somerset Road along its lower edge. Most of the gay bars, guesthouses and the Pride parade route are here or a few minutes' walk away. It's compact enough to cover on foot in an evening, and it sits about ten minutes by car from the V&A Waterfront.

The village has thinned out. Beefcakes, the burger-and-drag bar, closed around 2024 and went into liquidation. The Crow Bar on Waterkant Street shut at the end of July 2024 after 128 years, and Anatoli, the Turkish restaurant on Napier Street, closed in late 2023. Expect a handful of bars and a lot of mainstream restaurants and cafés, not a dense strip like Soho or the Castro.

Bars and clubs

Café Manhattan (74 Waterkant Street) opened in 1994, and in July 2026 Time Out's list of the world's greatest queer venues called it Africa's oldest queer bar. It's a gay-run restaurant and bar that opens daily from noon, and it's where most nights start. Crew Bar has moved from Napier Street to Cobern Street (Google lists 10 Cobern Street) and is the main gay bar and club in the village. Travel Gay and TravelPulse describe drag, karaoke and go-go nights, plus a quieter upstairs room called Kong. It's open nightly from 18:00 to 02:00.

The Pink Candy (120 Strand Street, formerly the Pink Panther) is the weekend dance club, open Friday and Saturday from 21:00 to 04:00, and it joined Café Manhattan on Time Out's 2026 list. Zer021 Social Club moved from De Waterkant to 46 Canterbury Street in District Six. It's a drag-led queer bar that hosted Cape Town Pride's official Pride Ball on 13 February 2026, and it opens Thursday to Sunday from 20:00.

Outside the village, Duchess Lounge (123 Lower Main Road, Observatory) is a queer bar popular with queer women. It hosted official Pride events in 2026 and runs quiz and karaoke nights. EVOL (69 Hope Street, Gardens) isn't a gay bar, but Cape Town nightlife magazine Texx and the City describes it as the base of the city's underground queer party scene, home to collectives such as Bathhouse and Death of Glitter. Stargayzer in Parow, about 15 km out in the northern suburbs, is a no-frills local gay club open on Friday and Saturday nights.

Cape Town has no dedicated lesbian bar any more. Beaulah on Somerset Road, long described as one, shows no sign of life in 2025 or 2026, and other businesses now trade at its address.

Queer parties and drag

Much of the energy is in parties rather than bars, so check listings before you fly. Night of the Queens is a recurring drag dinner show at the Time Out Market in the V&A Waterfront, with dates announced on the market's own site. Collective parties such as Bathhouse and Death of Glitter run at EVOL. Gat Party is a queer langarm and sokkie (Afrikaans partner-dancing) night in the northern suburbs, held most months. Quicket is the main ticketing site; search it for "queer" or "drag" for the week you're in town.

Cruising and saunas

Cape Town has no full gay sauna. Hot House on Jarvis Street, the city's gay sauna for more than 20 years, has closed and hasn't reopened. The one dedicated venue is Shaft Cruise Zone at 299 Lower Main Road, Observatory: men only, 18+, with a bar, steam room, video lounges, maze and cabins. Google lists it as open from noon to midnight, and until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and its 2026 price list gave R150 before 18:00 and R190 after. Our Cape Town cruising guide covers it in detail, along with South Africa's law on sex in public places.

Beaches

Clifton 3rd Beach, one of four coves below Victoria Road between Sea Point and Camps Bay, is the beach Cape Town's gay crowd has used for decades. Lonely Planet and Travel Gay both describe it as gay-popular, though it's a public beach with a mixed crowd. The water is cold all year, and parking fills early on summer weekends.

Sandy Bay, south of Llandudno inside Table Mountain National Park, is a walk of about 1.5 km from the Llandudno car park. It was long treated as Cape Town's unofficial nudist beach. In March 2026, though, SANParks said it "is not, and has not been, formally designated as a naturist beach", and by September signs on the path warned of fines for nudity and sexual misconduct. Wear swimwear, go in daylight with friends, and leave nothing in the car. Camps Bay is the glamorous, busy beach for people-watching, but it isn't a gay beach.

Where to stay

For the village, The Grey Hotel (49 Napier Street) is a 13-room boutique hotel with a rooftop bar, and Cape Town Pride lists it among its recommended stays. Soul Fam Hostel in Green Point is queer-owned and bills itself as Africa's first LGBTQ+ inclusive hostel. Cactus House in Oranjezicht is a small gay men's, adults-only guesthouse, but its website is down, so confirm by phone before you book. Pink Rose Guesthouse is men-only, but it's in Somerset West, about 45 km from the city centre.

Among mainstream hotels that are comfortable for gay guests, The Glen Boutique Hotel & Spa in Sea Point (Cape Town Pride recommends it), Gorgeous George on St Georges Mall and The Grand Daddy on Long Street are all central and well reviewed. Long Street is loud at weekends, so ask for a room at the back.

Health and support

Triangle Project (2-4 Seymour Street, Observatory) is Cape Town's main LGBTIQ+ support organisation, with a clinic, counselling and support groups; its helpline is 021 712 6699, from 13:00 to 21:00. The Ivan Toms Centre for Health (Health4Men, 1 Portswood Road, Green Point) offers HIV testing, PrEP and STI care for men who have sex with men. Gender DynamiX in Bellville works with trans and gender-diverse people, and Pride Shelter Trust in Oranjezicht runs short-term crisis accommodation for LGBTI people. Phone before visiting any of them.

Cape Town Pride and big events

Cape Town Pride is a month-long festival in February. In 2026 it ran from 5 February to 1 March, and the parade left Alfred Street in De Waterkant at 11:00 on Saturday 28 February, then went along Somerset Road to the Mardi Gras at Green Point Track. Cape Town Pride's own Instagram has announced the 2027 dates: the festival runs from 5 to 28 February 2027, with the parade and Mardi Gras on Saturday 27 February. Mardi Gras early-bird tickets go on sale at the end of November 2026. Cape Town will host WorldPride 2028, the first in Africa, from 30 September to 14 October 2028, after winning the InterPride vote in October 2024.

MCQP (the Mother City Queer Project), the costume party founded in 1994, held its 30th edition on 14 December 2024. We found no 2025 edition and no 2026 announcement. Khumbulani Pride is a township march held around 17 May that remembers victims of hate crimes. It moves each year, and the 2025 march was in Strand. The Pink Loerie Mardi Gras is in Knysna, not Cape Town.

Safety and getting around

South African law protects you; the street can't always. De Waterkant, the City Bowl, Sea Point and the Waterfront are fine by day, but don't walk between neighbourhoods after dark. Use Uber or Bolt door to door, wait inside until the car arrives, and check the plate. Car break-ins at beaches and trailheads are common, so leave the car empty. Hike Lion's Head and Table Mountain in groups and start early. MyCiTi buses link the Civic Centre with the Waterfront, Green Point, Sea Point, Camps Bay and the airport, but they don't run all night. In an emergency, call 10111 (police) or 112 from a mobile.
