Paphos and the wider Cyprus scene

Paphos (Pafos) sits on the southwest coast of Cyprus, a relaxed resort town with a large British and northern-European visitor and expat population. It is not a gay destination in the way of a big-city scene, and it is honest to say so: the island's real gay nightlife is concentrated in Limassol, Nicosia and Larnaca. What Paphos offers instead is an easy-going Mediterranean holiday base — sun, sea, ancient history and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere in its tourist quarter — with one dedicated gay bar and a well-known gay-and-naturist beach nearby.

Safety and the law

Cyprus is generally safe and comfortable for LGBTQ+ travellers, and Paphos especially so given how tourism-driven it is. Same-sex activity was decriminalised in 1998, the age of consent was equalised in 2002, and civil unions for same-sex couples have been recognised since December 2015. Conversion therapy was banned in 2023. Same-sex marriage and joint adoption are still not available. Anti-discrimination protections cover employment and services. In the resort areas you can be yourself without much thought; in conservative villages and away from the tourist strip, a little discretion with public displays of affection is sensible.

Neighbourhoods

Kato Paphos (Lower Paphos), around the harbour, is where visitors spend their evenings — it holds the resorts, the seafront promenade and Ayiou Antoniou, the tourist "Bar Street" where the town's gay bar sits. The Old Town (Ktima), the upper town inland, is quieter and more local, with markets and tavernas. Further north, Coral Bay and Peyia are the beach-resort suburbs that give access to the Sea Caves, while Chloraka lies between the two with additional apartments and coastline.

Bars & nightlife

The Different Bar on Ayiou Antoniou in Kato Paphos is the only dedicated gay bar in town, and effectively the whole local scene. It is a small, friendly, unpretentious place — cheap drinks, free shots and a mixed crowd of gay and lesbian locals, holidaymakers and straight friends — open in the evenings and into the early hours. There are no gay clubs, saunas or a gay quarter in Paphos; travellers wanting a bigger night out head to Limassol, about an hour east along the motorway.

Beaches

The Sea Caves near Coral Bay and Peyia, about 17 km north of town, are Paphos's unofficial gay and naturist beach: a run of secluded rocky coves reached by a coastal path past the headland, popular for nude sunbathing and discreet daytime cruising. There are no facilities, so take water and sun protection. (Cyprus's other well-known gay-friendly beaches — Governor's Beach and White Rocks — are near Limassol, not Paphos.)

Pride & events

Paphos does not have its own Pride. Cyprus Pride, organised by Accept-LGBTI Cyprus, is held on the island in late May or early June, centred on Nicosia, with Limassol also staging its own Pride. Paphos visitors typically travel to those cities for the main celebrations; any local queer parties tend to be seasonal and promoted through social media rather than fixed venues.

Where to stay

Paphos is full of gay-friendly accommodation rather than gay-specific hotels, most of it clustered in Kato Paphos near the harbour and seafront. Adults-only boutique options such as the M Boutique Hotel and larger beach resorts like the Alexander The Great Beach Hotel and Athena Royal Beach Hotel are popular with couples, while central choices like the Regency Boutique Hotel put you within walking distance of the Different Bar.

Beyond the scene

Paphos rewards daytime exploring. The UNESCO-listed Paphos Archaeological Park and its Roman mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings, the medieval harbour castle and, a short drive away, the wild Akamas Peninsula and Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou) are all worth a visit. The best months are April to June and September to October; July and August are very hot.
