The honest summary: Cluj-Napoca has a small, real queer scene rather than a gay district. There is one gay club, a large LGBT sauna that opened as the sister of Bucharest's Soho, a Pride march that has walked through the centre every June since 2017, and Romania's oldest queer film festival. Most nights out happen in mixed bars around the old town, and the community is easier to find through Asociația Pride's events than through any single street.
Legal in one line: Same-sex relations are legal (fully since 2001, equal age of consent 16), but Romania recognises no same-sex marriage or civil partnership. The Civil Code bans same-sex marriage, the 2018 referendum to add a ban to the Constitution failed on low turnout, and the European Court of Human Rights ruled against Romania in Buhuceanu (2023) for giving couples no recognition at all.
What the scene looks like in 2026
Cluj (population 286,598 at the 2021 census) is Romania's big university city, home to Babeș-Bolyai University and tens of thousands of students. That gives it a young, fairly relaxed centre, but don't expect Budapest or Berlin. You can count the dedicated LGBTQ+ venues on one hand. The local listings site Zile și Nopți and Travel Gay both describe Delirio as the city's only gay and lesbian club. Asociația Pride runs the bigger moments: Pride week in June and the film festival in autumn.
Where to go out
Delirio The Club (Bulevardul 21 Decembrie 1989 nr. 8). Travel Gay and Zile și Nopți list it as Cluj's gay and lesbian club, with Friday and Saturday parties, go-go dancers and drag shows. Its published hours are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 22:00–05:00. Delirio partnered on the first Cluj Pride in 2017 (actualdecluj). We couldn't find any party announcements dated 2025 or 2026, and its old website no longer loads, so check its Facebook page (facebook.com/delirioclub) or call 0743 655 258 before you go.
Flying Circus (Strada Universității 3). This is a student-heavy pub and club rather than a gay bar. Older community guides describe it as a meeting point for "alternative" crowds and mention occasional queer parties. In Your Pocket lists it as open from 7pm until late, and later at weekends. Treat it as gay-friendly, not gay.
Sauna
Sauna Soho Cluj (Strada Victor Babeș 33, city centre) is run by the same group as Soho in Bucharest and calls itself "the first LGBT sauna in the western part of the country". Its own site describes 800 m² over three levels, with a wet sauna, a dry sauna, a jacuzzi, a salt room, relaxation cabins, massage and a bar. Published hours are 17:00–01:00 on Thursday and Sunday and 17:00–06:00 on Friday and Saturday. It is closed Monday to Wednesday. Towels and slippers are provided, and house rules say you may use only theirs. Prices are on saunasoho.ro.
Cluj Pride is organised by Asociația Pride (PRIDE România). The first march took place on 1 July 2017, and City Hall approved it only after weeks of negotiation (actualdecluj). It has run every June since. The 2025 march was on 14 June. The 2026 edition was a festival week from 15 to 21 June, ending with the ninth march on Sunday 21 June. The march started and finished at Piața Unirii, looping through Regele Ferdinand, George Barițiu, Emil Isac, Petru Maior, Piața Lucian Blaga and Strada Napoca. Local press reported thousands of marchers. A small counter-rally, about 50 people in 2026, usually gathers in Piața Avram Iancu on the same day. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing.
Gay Film Nights (Serile Filmului Gay) is Romania's first queer film festival. Be An Angel, the association that later became PRIDE România, has run it in Cluj since 2004, usually in autumn, with free screenings. Check asociatiapride.ro and Instagram (@asociatiapride) for this year's programme.
Community and health
PRIDE România / Asociația Pride (asociatiapride.ro) runs Pride week, the film festival and advocacy work all year. Activist Lucian Dunăreanu founded it in 2002 as Be An Angel Romania.
LES Sisterhood Cluj is a social group for lesbian, bi, trans and queer women, set up by the artist and activist Ruth Borgfjord. It posts its events on Facebook: game nights, speed dating, pub crawls and outdoor trips.
The national groups ACCEPT and MozaiQ are based in Bucharest. For HIV and hepatitis testing, the ARAS network runs a Checkpoint in Cluj. Confirm the current address and hours on aras.ro.
Where to stay
No hotel in Cluj markets itself as gay, and we haven't found one with a documented LGBTQ+ policy. So choose by location. If you stay in or near the old centre, around Piața Unirii and Strada Universității, you can walk to Delirio, Flying Circus and the sauna. Our Cluj hotel list covers central and budget options and shows real Google ratings.
Airport: Avram Iancu International Airport (CLJ) is about 9 km east of the centre, with buses and taxis into town.
Public affection: holding hands is usually fine in the centre at night, and less so in the outer residential districts. Romania is still socially conservative, and Cluj Pride draws a counter-protest every year, so read the room.
Apps are where most locals meet, which is normal in a city with one club.
Day trips: Turda Salt Mine and Turda Gorge are under an hour to the south. The Saxon towns, Sighișoara among them, are two to three hours away by road or rail.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
OUTside is an old listing at the same address as Delirio (Bulevardul 21 Decembrie 1989 nr. 8). We found no independent source showing it as a separate venue, so go to Delirio instead.
The Soviet and After Eight appeared as gay bars on some online lists, including ours until this update. Both are mainstream bars, and we couldn't document an LGBTQ+ identity for either.
Bruno Wine Bar and Club Midi have closed. Midi was never a gay club.
Cluj has no documented cruising area, and we don't list outdoor spots.
