Gay Košice: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: Košice has no gay bar, no gay club and no gay sauna, and as far as we can tell it hasn't had a permanent one for years. What it does have is one of the most stubborn Prides in Central Europe, a working LGBTI+ community centre, and a couple of big cultural venues where queer parties happen a few times a year. Come for Pride weekend in late August or for the city itself, and don't plan on a night out that you could find in Bratislava, Budapest or Kraków.

Legal in one line: Sex between men has been legal since 1962 and the age of consent has been equal since 1990, but Slovakia recognises no same-sex partnerships at all. The constitution has defined marriage as a union of a man and a woman since 2014, and an amendment passed on 26 September 2025 (with exactly the 90 votes it needed) recognises only two sexes and limits adoption to married couples. The 2004 Antidiscrimination Act still covers sexual orientation in work, goods and services.

The city in a few lines
Košice is Slovakia's second city, with about 222,000 people, and the main city of the east. The Old Town is built around Hlavná, a long, lens-shaped main street with St Elisabeth's Cathedral (the largest church in Slovakia), the State Theatre and the singing fountain in the middle. Nearly everything a visitor needs is on or just off Hlavná. Košice was European Capital of Culture in 2013, and two of the projects from that year, Kasárne Kulturpark and Tabačka Kulturfabrik, are now where much of the city's queer public life takes place.

Bars & Clubs

Bars and clubs: what actually exists
We searched in English and Slovak ("gay bar Košice", "gay klub", "LGBT Košice", "queer Košice") and found no venue that presents itself as gay or queer. Some online lists, ours included until this month, called FEST Bar on Hlavná a gay bar. We found nothing to support that. It's a regular cocktail bar opposite the Urban Tower, so we've removed it.

What exists instead are party nights. Tepláreň, a queer party brand run by Queer Slovakia, has been held at Tabačka Kulturfabrik (Gorkého 2). The national tourist board describes it as roughly every two months, though the listing isn't dated, and it was the after-party venue at Pride 2026. Watch Tabačka's programme and the Queer Slovakia and PRIDE Košice social accounts. If you're in town on a party weekend, that is the night out.

Ponq, a café, gallery and community space on Hrnčiarska (the old craft lane behind Hlavná), opened in September 2025. It describes itself as inclusive and is mentioned by PRIDE Košice, but we couldn't confirm regular queer events there, so treat it as a friendly café, not a scene venue.

Community: Saplinq and PRIZMA
Saplinq is the Košice LGBTI+ civic association. It was founded in 2012, organises PRIDE Košice and runs PRIZMA, a counselling and community centre for LGBTI+ people with regular community meetings. If you're staying longer, or you want to meet local people outside a party, write to them first. Their contact address is Slobody 30, and saplinq.org lists the current programme.

Pride & Events

PRIDE Košice
PRIDE Košice has been held every year since 2013. The early marches were small: about 200 people walked from Kulturpark down Hlavná to Kulturfabrik in 2015. By 2023 it had passed a thousand participants. That year supporters of the far-right ĽSNS tried to block the march, and there were scuffles. The 2023 theme was a response to the October 2022 shooting outside the Tepláreň bar on Zámocká street in Bratislava, in which two young men were killed.

The 2025 parade left Kasárne Kulturpark on 23 August. The 2026 edition, themed IM/PULZ, ran from 21 to 23 August with the parade on Saturday 22 August and Tabačka as the hub. The 2027 dates were not announced at the time of writing; past years point to the second half of August. Poprad, in the High Tatras foothills, now holds its own Pride a week later (29 August in 2026).

Gone, or never there
- FEST Bar, Hlavná: a mainstream bar, not a gay one (see above).
- "Marseille": named as a gay club in Košice by an old national tourism page, with no address or date. We found no trace of it, so assume it has closed.
- Saunas: Košice has several public saunas and wellness centres (Sauna Terasa, La Vita, Zulu and others). None is gay, and they are mixed or family places, so don't treat them as cruising venues.
- We found no cruising areas named in any current source, and we don't list outdoor ones anyway.

Safety

Safety and how people behave
Košice is calm for visitors, and the Old Town is busy until late in summer. Most queer locals are discreet in public, and holding hands on Hlavná will get looks from some people. Dating apps are the main way people meet here. Use them the normal way: meet somewhere public first, and don't share more than you need to.

Getting there and around
Košice Airport (KSC) is about 6 km south of the centre, about 20 minutes on bus 23 or 10 to 15 minutes by taxi. Trains to Bratislava take about four and a half to five hours, and the fastest ones are the IC services. Budapest is about four hours by train, and Prešov is about 36 km north, 30 to 40 minutes away. The station is a short walk from the Old Town. Trams cover the rest, and Bolt works in the city.

Where to Stay

Where to stay
Stay in the Old Town (Staré Mesto) if you can, because everything, including Pride, is walkable from there. Our hotel list for Košice is mainstream guesthouses and hotels, none LGBTQ+-owned as far as we know. Horse Inn, Blue Bell Penzión and Penzion Sport are central and well reviewed. Vila Terrasse in Západ, Barca and Bonaparte near the airport need a bus or taxi.

Beyond the scene
St Elisabeth's Cathedral and its tower, the Urban Tower and the Lower Gate excavations under Hlavná are the Old Town sights. The Košice Peace Marathon on the first Sunday of October has been run since 1924 and is Europe's oldest marathon. Spiš Castle and the Slovak Karst caves are each about an hour away.

A few words in Slovak
Ďakujem: thank you. Prosím: please / you're welcome. Gej: gay. Lesba: lesbian. Dúha: rainbow. Teplý literally means "warm" and is the old slang for gay men. It can be an insult, but the community has reclaimed it, which is why the bar and the parties are called Tepláreň.

At a glance
- Gay bars or clubs: none
- Gay saunas: none
- Queer parties: Tepláreň at Tabačka, irregular
- Community centre: PRIZMA (Saplinq)
- Pride: PRIDE Košice, late August (2026: 21–23 Aug); 2027 not yet announced
- Partnerships: no legal recognition
- Airport: KSC, 6 km
- Nearest bigger scenes: Budapest (about 4 h), Bratislava (about 5 h), Kraków

よくある質問

No. We found no bar, club or sauna in Košice that presents itself as gay or queer, in English or Slovak sources. Queer nightlife comes as party nights instead. Tepláreň parties (run by Queer Slovakia) have been held at Tabačka Kulturfabrik, and PRIDE Košice has its own after-party. For a regular scene, Budapest (about 4 hours by train) and Bratislava (about 5) are the nearest options.

PRIDE Košice is held every year in the second half of August and has run since 2013. In 2026 the festival ran 21–23 August, with the parade on Saturday 22 August and Tabačka Kulturfabrik as the hub. The 2025 parade was on 23 August from Kasárne Kulturpark. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing, so check pridekosice.sk.

For visitors, generally yes. The Old Town is busy and calm. Most queer locals are discreet in public, though, and open affection draws looks. In 2023 far-right ĽSNS supporters tried to block the Pride march and there were scuffles, and Slovakia has no legal recognition of same-sex couples. Use dating apps with normal care and meet somewhere public first.

At PRIDE Košice in August, at Tepláreň party nights, and through Saplinq. Saplinq is the local LGBTI+ association, and it runs PRIZMA, a counselling and community centre with regular meetings. Contact them via saplinq.org before you visit. Otherwise, dating apps are how most people meet.

Sex between men has been legal since 1962, and the age of consent has been equal since 1990. There are no civil partnerships or same-sex marriage. The constitution has defined marriage as man and woman since 2014, and an amendment passed on 26 September 2025 recognises only two sexes and limits adoption to married couples. The 2004 Antidiscrimination Act covers sexual orientation.

Stay in the Old Town (Staré Mesto), on or near Hlavná. Pride, Tabačka, Kasárne Kulturpark, the station and most restaurants are within walking distance. Our Košice hotels are mainstream guesthouses and hotels. Horse Inn, Blue Bell Penzión and Penzion Sport are central.
