Hotel Carlton is Bilbao's historic grand hotel, on Plaza Federico Moyúa in the Ensanche, the city's 19th-century commercial district. It opened in 1926 and served as the seat of the Basque government during the Spanish Civil War. It is a mainstream luxury hotel. Gay guests should have no issues, but it is not a gay venue. The Guggenheim is about 10-15 minutes away on foot, and the Casco Viejo, where Bilbao's few gay bars are, is a similar walk. Rooms are classic rather than modern. Nearly 3,000 Google reviews average 4.5.

Excellent hotel and ideally located in the city center. Staff very helpful with parking the car in the garage and escorting us to the room! We left our mobile phones in the room… contacted the hotel and they arranged for a taxi to pick them up for us at the port of Bilbao! What service!!! Definitely worth its stars!

Lovely hotel with old charm , Serice and staff excellent and very friendly . Bathrooms could do with an upgrade . A shower in a bath in a 5 star is not really 2026 . The balcony terrace over the city is special for a drink . would return when in Bilbao .

Perfect location for getting around on foot. All the streets leading from the bridges over the Rio Bilbao converge on this square. Breakfast is a bit pricey but superb. No need to eat lunch there.
