The honest summary: Torremolinos is the oldest gay resort in Spain, and its whole scene still fits inside one 1960s shopping complex, La Nogalera, a two-minute walk from the train station. About 28 gay bars and clubs plus six cruise clubs share its passages, the gay beach is ten minutes down the cliff, and the town hall itself runs Pride. It is not glamorous and it is not Ibiza, but nowhere else in Europe packs this much gay nightlife into so few square metres.
LEGAL IN ONE LINE
Spain: same-sex marriage since 2005 (Ley 13/2005), self-ID gender recognition since 2023 (Ley 4/2023), and Andalusia has its own LGBTI equality law (Ley 8/2017). ILGA-Europe ranked Spain first on its 2026 Rainbow Map. Holding hands in La Nogalera draws no attention at all.
A SHORT HISTORY
Gay bars opened in Torremolinos in the early 1960s, decades before Spain's transition to democracy. Tony's, opened in 1962 in Pasaje Begoña, is often called Spain's first gay bar. On the night of 25 to 26 June 1971 the Franco police raided the passage, closed 23 businesses and arrested well over a hundred people, many of them taken to Málaga. The street lost its name in the 1980s and got it back in 2019. The Junta de Andalucía declared Pasaje Begoña a Place of Historical Memory in 2018, and Correos issued a stamp for it in 2020. La Nogalera itself, designed by the architect Antonio Lamela in 1961, became the centre of the scene once the bars moved there.
WHERE THE SCENE IS
La Nogalera is the scene. It is a raised concrete complex of plazas and passages between Calle Casablanca, Calle Danza Invisible and the station, with bars in numbered locales (that is why addresses read "Local 703"). Pueblo Blanco, the white courtyard just south, holds a few quieter bars. Montemar, two kilometres south-west, is where the sauna is. Playa del Bajondillo is the beach below the cliff.
Clubs: AQUA is the corner complex as you walk in (terrace, club and the Bunker downstairs), Parthenon has been a gay disco for about 30 years and has a darkroom, and Centuryon on Calle Casablanca runs Saturday nights from 01:00 to 07:00 plus the Matrix parties. Eden Night Club, the plaza's flagship since 2012, closed on 14 March 2026; the space reopened as Palomo Night Club under new owners. Nothing gets busy before midnight, and on summer weekends the passages are full until 05:00.
There is one gay sauna: Apolo Sauna Cabaret in Montemar, about 1,500 square metres with a Finnish sauna, jacuzzi, cabins, a maze and drag shows, open daily from 15:00 to 22:00, about €16. Málaga city has no gay sauna, so Apolo serves the whole coast.
The cruising clubs are in or near La Nogalera: Cuero (Calle la Nogalera 21, from 20:00, €5 with a drink, theme nights), XXL (Avenida Palma de Mallorca 14, 22:00 to 05:00, no entry fee), Exxxtreme (Calle Skal 2, from 22:30, about €30), Men's Bar with its downstairs play area, Bunker under AQUA (Saturdays 01:00 to 07:00), and Alcatraz Men's Club, a leather club off Plaza de Andalucía, a few minutes north, Wednesday to Sunday.
The gay stretch is the middle of Playa del Bajondillo, in front of Eden Beach Club, ten minutes down the steps from La Nogalera (the municipal lift at Plaza Punta Tarifa costs €1). Swimwear stays on. The nearest official naturist beach is Guadalmar, on the Málaga side past Los Álamos. El Gato's old beach lounge is listed as permanently closed; the El Gato brand now runs a restaurant on Calle Casablanca.
Eden Night Club / Eden Copas (closed March 2026, now Palomo), El Gato beach lounge (closed; restaurant on Calle Casablanca), Utopia sauna, Terma Sauna Miguel, Cupido, The Room, Ego Copas, LUCIFER and Passion are all gone. Paco's Club and Pepe's Bar, which older AI-written guides mention, never existed here. WonderGay festival has not run since 2017. Crews Bar is still listed by guides but Google marks it closed, so treat it as unconfirmed.
PRIDE AND EVENTS
Torremolinos Pride is a municipal festival, run since 2015. The 2026 edition ran from 26 May to 6 June with free concerts (Miss Caffeina, Agoney, Alba Reche) and the parade on Saturday 6 June from the town hall to the Centro Cultural Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Travel listings give 28 May to 6 June 2027, but the council had not confirmed it at the time of writing. Mad Bear Beach fills the town in August (2026: 7 to 18 August; organisers estimate about 9,000 visitors), with pool parties at Hotel Ritual and beach parties at Eden. The Infinity circuit festival runs twice a year, in June and around the 12 October holiday (2026: 7 to 11 October). The Torremolinos Fetish Weekend falls in early May.
WHERE TO STAY
Hotel Ritual on Calle Brasil is the big gay hotel: adults only, about 190 rooms, a nude-optional rooftop pool, and Mad Bear's base in August. Its 58-room sister Ritual Sireno is quieter and cheaper, and Maracuyá Gay House is the only men-only option, with five rooms. Hotel El Pozo and La Nogalera Collection sit inside the complex itself (cheap and loud). For a beach hotel with the gay beach downstairs, look at Hotel Fénix, Ocean House Costa del Sol or Sol Don Pablo; La Carihuela's hotels are quieter but 25 to 30 minutes' walk away.
Málaga airport (AGP) is about 10 minutes away on the C-1 Cercanías train from Terminal 3, every 20 minutes or so, for under €3. Get off at Torremolinos; La Nogalera is right outside. Málaga city is about 20 minutes the other way. Check the last train before a night out in Málaga.
PRACTICAL TIPS
Bars change hands often, so check Instagram before crossing town for one place. Many bars cut their nights between November and February, though the plaza is never empty at weekends. Spanish hotels register every overnight guest's ID, so tell reception if you bring someone back. The local LGBT business association, ACOGAT, publishes its member list at torremolinosplus.com, which is the best current list of what is open.
A FEW WORDS IN SPANISH
