It's two in the morning on 14th Street, the bars of Logan Circle are emptying out, and a steady trickle of men is still heading into the bathhouse that has stood on this stretch of 14th Street for more than a quarter of a century. A few blocks north, at 14th and U, someone pulls a lever on an old candy vending machine inside a Peruvian chicken shop and disappears into the dark. Washington's cruising history is long, from Lafayette Square in the 1890s to the riverside parks of the 20th century, and so is its history of police stings. Today the scene is small and almost entirely indoors: one 24-hour bathhouse, one leather bar, a handful of shirts-off parties, one huge leather weekend every January, and the apps.

Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal in DC for decades, same-sex marriage since 2010, and the DC Human Rights Act protects you from discrimination; bathhouses and bars are legal, licensed businesses. Sex in public is not: under DC Code § 22-1312, a sexual act, masturbation or indecent exposure in public is a misdemeanour punishable by a fine, up to 90 days in jail, or both.

How cruising works in DC

DC doesn't have the cruise bars and darkrooms of Berlin or Madrid. What it has is Crew Club, open round the clock, and a bar scene where the kink nights at District Eagle and the late parties at Bunker do a lot of the work. Everything else happens on the phone: Grindr is the main app, and Sniffies is widely used for quick hook-ups in the US. Most visitors meet in hotel rooms. If you're bringing someone back, keep valuables out of sight and tell a friend where you are.

The bathhouse

Crew Club · 1321 14th St NW, Logan Circle

DC's gay bathhouse has been in the same building on 14th Street for more than 25 years. It closed during the pandemic in 2020, while its owners considered selling the building, but reopened, and its website lists it as open 24 hours a day, seven days a week; visitor reviews from the summer and autumn of 2026 confirm it's running. Inside: showers, a steam room, a sauna, a lounge, lockers and private rooms, and Out x Out also describes a maze and a small gym. Dress is up to you: a towel, underwear, a harness, swimwear or nothing at all. Towels are provided; bring flip-flops.

Prices at the time of writing (from its website): you need a membership, either one-time ($10 on weekdays, $14 at weekends), 30 days ($25) or 90 days ($50), plus a rental: a locker ($20 weekdays, $24 weekends), a Crew Room ($28/$32) or a Captain's Room ($32/$36). Weekday rates run from 8am Monday to 4pm Friday; weekend rates apply from 4pm Friday to 8am Monday and on holidays, and event weekends can cost more. Rentals last six hours, with one renewal allowed.

    • Deals: men aged 18 to 24 get membership and a locker free every day. Rooms are half price on weekdays from 10am to 2pm and all Tuesday (9am to midnight), lockers are half price on Thursdays from 4pm to midnight, and Friday's happy hour (4pm to 7pm) has half-price rooms with a four-hour limit.
    • Rules: 18+ with valid photo ID. No alcohol, no drugs, no outside food or drink, and no photos in public areas.
    • When to go: reviewers say evenings and nights are livelier and daytime quieter. Late on Friday and Saturday, after the bars close, is the peak.

    Leather, kink and parties

    District Eagle · 1357-B U St NW

Opened on 22 January 2025, District Eagle is DC's leather and kink bar, and it plays up the hidden-door fun: walk into Lucky Pollo, the Peruvian chicken shop, pull a lever on the vintage candy vending machine and it swings open into a dark corridor lined with Tom of Finland murals. Metro Weekly described it as leaning into "the dark, sexy vibe of cruising and kink". Inside are a bar hung with chains, a dance floor and DJ booth, a long leather couch, a bootblack chair, a caged shop selling gear, and padded nooks at the back. On Eagle XL nights it spreads upstairs, and capacity rises from about 116 to about 300. It's a bar, not a sex club: think gear, flirting and taking someone home. There's no compulsory dress code, but jockstrap and gear nights give discounts, and open-toed shoes are discouraged. Cover is usually free except for special events. At launch it opened 6pm–2am Wednesday and Thursday, 6pm–3am Friday, 2pm–3am Saturday and 2pm–midnight Sunday; check its socials for this week's nights.

    Bunker · 2001 14th St NW

Next door and run by the same team, Bunker is a basement dance club with industrial decor and themed, shirts-optional nights. It's not a cruise venue, but late on a weekend, with the cover paid and the shirts off, it's where a lot of DC hook-ups start. Parties run until about 3:30am.

    The party circuit

On big weekends, promoters such as Kinetic put on gear and cruise-themed parties in clubs and warehouses. During Capital Pride 2026, for example, Kinetic's "Lust" and Gear Night took over District Eagle, its "UNCUT XXL" party ran in a warehouse near Union Market on Friday 19 June, and the main Pride party was at Echostage. Watch the promoters' socials and the weekly listings in Metro Weekly and the Washington Blade.

    Glorious Health & Art Gallery

misterb&b lists a steam room and showers inside a gay-owned art gallery, Glorious Health & Art Gallery, at 2120 West Virginia Ave NE in Northeast DC. We couldn't confirm current hours or how it operates in 2026, so contact it before you go.

Gone: the old DC Eagle on Benning Road in Northeast DC is long closed; District Eagle on U Street is a new, unrelated bar. Rush, the club above Bunker at 2001 14th St NW, opened in December 2025 and closed in February 2026.

    Mid-Atlantic Leather and big weekends

Mid-Atlantic Leather (MAL) is DC's biggest fetish event, produced by the Centaur Motorcycle Club over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The 2027 edition runs from Friday 15 to Monday 18 January 2027 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill (400 New Jersey Ave NW). Expect Leather Cocktails in the ballroom, a leather exhibit hall full of gear and community groups, the Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather contest on the Sunday (the winner goes on to International Mr. Leather in Chicago) and the closing REACTION dance party. Every bar and Crew Club are packed that weekend, and hotel rooms go fast. Passes are sold through the Centaur MC.

Capital Pride ran from 12 to 21 June 2026, with the parade on Saturday 20 June and the festival on Sunday 21 June; DC Black Pride ran over Memorial Day weekend, 22–25 May 2026. Both bring a wave of parties. See the gay Washington DC guide for details.

Outdoors: the law, the police and the risks

DC has a long, well-documented history of outdoor cruising, from Lafayette Square opposite the White House, where 18 men were arrested in 1892, to the Potomac shoreline parks of the 20th century. We don't list outdoor cruising spots in DC and we don't give directions to any. Here's why.

The law: under DC Code § 22-1312, a sexual act, masturbation or obscene or indecent exposure in public is a misdemeanour: a fine, up to 90 days in jail, or both. Charges can also include disorderly conduct.

Who enforces it: much of DC's green space, including the Mall, Rock Creek Park and many smaller city parks, is federal land run by the National Park Service and patrolled by the US Park Police, alongside the city's Metropolitan Police. The Park Police has a record of plainclothes operations: from early 2000 to March 2001 it arrested 293 people for public sex along the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and in 2019 it said 26 men had been arrested over about a year in a single Northwest DC park, on charges including lewd acts, disorderly conduct and unlawful entry.

The 2025–26 context: since August 2025, National Guard troops from across the country have patrolled DC's busy public areas, and the deployment is set to continue until 2029. Troops are armed, deputised as special police and can detain people. There are more uniforms in public spaces than at any time in recent memory.

Safety: robbery and assault are the other risk in quiet places after dark, and victims of a set-up may be reluctant to call the police. If you meet someone from an app, meet first in a bar, keep your phone and cash to a minimum, and tell a friend where you're going. In an emergency, call 911.

    Practical tips

    • ID: Crew Club and every bar will ask for photo ID. Foreign visitors should carry a passport.
    • Getting home: since June 2025, Metrorail runs until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights and opens at 6am at weekends; on other nights it closes much earlier. Crew Club is within about 15 minutes' walk of McPherson Square (Blue, Orange and Silver), Dupont Circle (Red) and U Street (Green), and District Eagle is right by U Street station. After closing, use a rideshare or taxi.
    • Payment: cards are taken almost everywhere, and a DC law in force since 1 January 2025 bars businesses from refusing cash.
    • Health: Whitman-Walker Health, 1525 14th St NW, two blocks from Crew Club, offers HIV and STI testing and PrEP. PEP must start within 72 hours of a risk: call Whitman-Walker or go to a hospital emergency room.
    • Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol, never dose for someone else, and call 911 if someone won't wake up. Crew Club bans drugs and alcohol on the premises.
    • Consent and photos: "no" is enough, everywhere. Phones stay away in the bathhouse and in the back of the bar.

    A few words to know

    • Bathhouse – the American word for a gay sauna.
    • Membership and rental – at Crew Club you pay for both: membership gets you in, the rental is your locker or room.
    • Gear night – leather, rubber, harness or sportswear encouraged, often with a drinks discount.
    • Bootblack – the person who cleans and conditions leather boots, a fixture of leather bars.
    • Carded – asked for ID at the door.
    • The DMV – DC, Maryland and Virginia, as in "the DMV leather scene".
    • Moe – old-school DC slang for "mate".

How much does Crew Club in DC cost?

At the time of writing, a one-time membership is $10 on weekdays and $14 at weekends, plus a locker ($20 weekdays, $24 weekends) or a private room ($28 to $36). Rentals last six hours.
