The honest summary: Laval is a big, quiet suburb with no gay bar, no gay sauna and no Pride of its own. Gay life here is residential, and nightlife means taking the Orange Line into Montreal's Village. What Laval does have is a working queer health and community centre, SPHÈRE, plus metro-side hotels that cost less than downtown Montreal.
LEGAL IN ONE LINE
Fully legal and protected. Quebec added sexual orientation to its Charter of human rights in 1977, created civil unions in 2002 and allowed same-sex marriage in 2004 (Canada followed in 2005). Canada's conversion-therapy ban has been in force since January 2022.
THE CITY IN BRIEF
Laval covers all of Île Jésus, the island just north of Montreal across the Rivière des Prairies. It was created in 1965 by merging 14 municipalities, and with 438,366 people in the 2021 census it is Quebec's third-largest city, after Montreal and Quebec City. The old towns survive as districts: Chomedey, Laval-des-Rapides, Pont-Viau, Vimont, Sainte-Rose, Sainte-Dorothée, Fabreville, Duvernay, Auteuil, Saint-François and Saint-Vincent-de-Paul. The commercial centre is mid-island around the A-15, where the Carrefour Laval mall, Centropolis and Place Bell arena sit.
Bars & Clubs
BARS AND CLUBS
There are none. We checked Google Maps, Yelp, Fugues and French-language searches in October 2026 and found no gay or LGBTQ+ bar, club or regular queer night inside Laval. Searches for "bar gai Laval" return Montreal's Village on Sainte-Catherine Street East, or Laval strip clubs and singles bars. For a night out, go to the Village: Cabaret Mado for drag, Complexe Sky for dancing, and Le Stud or Aigle Noir for an older, bears-and-leather crowd. See our Montreal guide for the full list.
Saunas
SAUNAS
None in Laval. The gay saunas closest to Laval are all in Montreal: G.I. Joe, Oasis and Sauna Centre-Ville on Sainte-Catherine East in the Village, and Bain Colonial, a men-only bathhouse on Avenue Coloniale in the Plateau. Places in Laval with "sauna" in the name are sauna-equipment stores or mainstream spas.
COMMUNITY AND HEALTH SPHÈRE – Santé sexuelle globale (90 boulevard Lévesque Est, Pont-Viau; formerly Sida-Vie Laval) is the city's 2SLGBTQIA+ anchor. According to its website it offers free, confidential sexual-health services and testing, trans-affirming care, support groups for trans and non-binary young adults, a space for queer teens aged 12 to 17, an adult queer community space called Æntre Queer, and support for parents of trans youth. Call 450-669-3099 or check spheressg.org before you visit.
The City of Laval marks 17 May (International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia) with a rainbow flag at city hall and library programming; Courrier Laval reported this in 2022.
Pride & Events
PRIDE AND EVENTS
Laval doesn't have its own Pride festival or march. The regional event is Fierté Montréal, held over about ten days in late July and early August (in 2025 it ran from 31 July to 10 August, ending with the parade on René-Lévesque Boulevard). Dates for 2027 hadn't been announced at the time of writing. A warning for anyone searching: "Laval Pride" and "Fierté Laval" results are usually about Laval in France (Mayenne), whose march is organised by La Gom'53. That isn't this city.
GONE BUT STILL GOOGLED
Older directories, including earlier versions of this page, listed several Laval bars as gay-friendly or gay: Rose Boîte de Nuit on Rue Robinson, Crazy Moon on Boulevard des Laurentides, Bar Le Relax on Arthur-Sauvé, Bar Sexpert on Dagenais Ouest and Pontos on Cartier Ouest. None has any LGBTQ+ connection we could find. Some are strip or singles bars, and Crazy Moon appears closed. We've removed them. Stock Bar, Bar Taboo and Club DD's do exist, but they are in Montreal, not Laval.
GETTING INTO MONTREAL
The Orange Line of the Montreal Métro has three stations in Laval: Cartier, De la Concorde and Montmorency. Montmorency to Berri-UQAM takes about 25 minutes. Change there to the Green Line for one stop to Beaudry, in the middle of the Village. Laval stations are in fare zone B, so buy a ticket valid for zones A and B. The REM light-rail line to Deux-Montagnes opened on 17 November 2025 with Laval stations at Île-Bigras and Sainte-Dorothée. Exo's Saint-Jérôme commuter trains stop at De la Concorde, Vimont and Sainte-Rose. Local buses are run by the STL (Société de transport de Laval). Montréal-Trudeau airport (YUL) is about 20 km away, roughly 25 minutes by car outside rush hour.
Where to Stay
WHERE TO STAY
There's no gay hotel in Laval. The listed hotels are mainstream chains and independents, and their selling points are parking and lower prices than downtown Montreal. If you'll use the metro, the Courtyard by Marriott on Rue Lucien-Paiement is next to Montmorency station. The Sheraton, Holiday Inn, Omage (Tribute Portfolio) and Grand Hôtel Times cluster around Carrefour Laval and Centropolis, a bus ride from the metro. The motels on Boulevard des Laurentides are cheaper, but reviews are mixed, so read recent ones first.
THINGS TO DO BY DAY
The Cosmodôme space-science centre, the Centre de la nature park, and canoeing or skating at the Parc de la Rivière-des-Mille-Îles are Laval's main attractions. Centropolis has most of the restaurants and terraces. Place Bell hosts hockey and concerts.
PRACTICAL TIPS
- French is the everyday language. English is widely understood in shops and hotels, but a "bonjour" first goes a long way.
- Laval is built for cars. Without one, stay near Montmorency or Cartier station.
- The metro stops running at around 1:00 (a little later on Saturdays). Check stm.info for last departures, because after that you'll need a taxi or rideshare across the bridges.
- Winters are long and cold. The Village and Montreal's queer scene are busiest from June to September.
