The Red Inn

We ate at the restaurant here for our first night in Ptown and it was the perfect spot for it. Great ambiance, good food, hot servers — perfect trifecta. We had an 8pm reservation but got seated earlier at their bar tables. Not ideal for four people, but we made it work!

Jazz Brunch What an absolutely perfect experience we had celebrating my son’s birthday at jazz brunch this weekend. Wonderfully attentive and accommodating servers, and the food was delicious. The cherry on top was the beautiful music.

Sophisticated dinning experience. Loved the lobster roll salad and Bloody Mary. Jazz band was wonderful.

Dinner is a hit/miss here. The ambiance is fabulous, very romantic with charming architecture. But the food does not live up to expectations. - Risotto was bland/ not seasoned, while the scallops were flavorful - Lobster soup was bland/lacked seasoning, which was disappointing. - Smoked duck was good. But it is strange that the meat is deconstructed and formed into a large ball for serving. Overall, the restaurant is a fabulous ambiance, but the food lacks consistency and flavor.

Dinner was amazing! The service and food were fantastic! I had the halibut special. The chicken breast was also delicious.

The Red Inn restaurant never disappoints, even in a deluge. Delish oysters and panko coated, deep-fried shrimp. Lovely friendly and attentive staff, in fact, our server was a long-time Ptown resident who thoroughly enjoys her work. She was delightful. Everyone seemed to pitch in to make our dining experience fabulous.

The duck entree was very good. The cod was good but not as good as Cafe Heaven. The soups were good as were the desserts. The sound level in the dining room was very high making conversation difficult. The service was mediocre. All and all, good but disappointing.

In 25 years of dining at The Red Inn, this was my worst experience there. Both the food and service fell well below what I expect from a fine dining restaurant and what it has been in years past. The service lacked basic coordination. Our entrées arrived before our salad plates had been cleared, leaving us scrambling to make room while the food runner tried to squeeze additional plates onto an already crowded table. Guests should not have to manage the table clearing themselves. My steak, ordered medium, arrived well done and practically submerged in thin, watery brown sauce. The presentation resembled a brown swimming pool—hardly an appetizing way to serve a steak. The host staff repeatedly walked through the dining room without appearing to engage with guests or check on their meals - it was more like they were making their required laps per hour quota. Their pajama-like attire also felt out of place for the setting. More concerning, however, was the lack of attentive service. Our waiter seemed out of his depth and did not handle the issues with the professionalism or grace the situation called for. The overall impression was of a team that needed substantially better training, coordination, and management. After so many years of dining here, it was particularly disappointing to experience such a decline in the standards that historically made The Red Inn even more special.
