Same-sex relations are legal in Węgry, but social attitudes vary and public displays of affection can attract negative attention. No — same-sex marriage is not currently recognised in Węgry. Some form of registered partnership is available, providing partial rights (see the Legal Status panel on this page for specifics). Hungary decriminalised same-sex relations in 1961, introduced registered partnerships in 2009 and then spent fifteen years legislating against LGBTQ people. The 2012 constitution limits marriage to a man and a woman; 2020 amendments banned adoption by same-sex couples and ended legal gender recognition entirely; the 2021 'child protection' law banned content depicting homosexuality or gender transition to minors; and in 2025 Fidesz passed a Pride ban and a constitutional amendment recognising only two sexes. Budapest Pride in June 2025 went ahead without a permit and became the largest in the city's history, with well over 100,000 marchers. Then the ground moved. The Tisza Party defeated Fidesz in April 2026, the EU Court of Justice ruled the 2021 law unlawful the same month, Budapest Pride received its permits in May, and in October 2026 Parliament stripped the 'promotion' provisions from the child protection law. The marriage definition, the adoption ban and the gender recognition ban still stand as of November 2026, and the 2004 anti-discrimination law covering sexual orientation and gender identity has remained in force throughout. Polling now shows 68 percent support for same-sex marriage. Budapest has a solid scene around the 6th and 7th districts.
