Fossar de la Pedrera — Pomnik Deportowanych

After the Civil War, nearly 2,000 people executed after sham trials were buried in quicklime in this mass grave, which had previously been used to bury beggars and unclaimed bodies. This site is essential to ensure that the victims of the pro-fascist uprising against the democratically elected government are never forgotten.

A somewhat unsettling place to remember Catalonia's history and pay tribute to its many innocent victims. A wide esplanade at the bottom of what was surely an old quarry makes you feel small. You can also visit the tomb of Lluís Companys i Jover, president of the Generalitat, who was executed by the Franco regime on October 15, 1940. A visit to the rest of the cemetery grounds, which is like a small city, is also highly recommended. Besides the typical niches and tombs, you can see mausoleums, statues, and other buildings that are true works of art. There is also a free museum of hearses and coaches, but we arrived late and it was already closed. They are only open on weekends.

A place of peace for those who haven't been able to find a proper and respectful rest. It's striking to think that despite what happened, it's a beautiful place; however, please dedicate more time to the upkeep of this memorial.

Beautiful place with a lot of historical content. There you will find the burial place of Lluís Companys, the memorial of the victims of nazism, and other interesting monuments. It is located in the upper part of the Montjuïc Cementery. To get to there you need to enter through the entrance of the Cementery because the direct entrance to the Fossar is always closed.
